Why you shouldn’t close the air vents on an airplane?

Many people feel uncomfortable with the cold air on airplanes and try to close the air vents with their hands, but experts advise against doing so.

The first thing that many passengers do when boarding a plane is to close the vent on their head because they do not feel comfortable with the cold air coming out of it. This is a mistake.

Why should you not close the air vent on a plane?

In most commercial aircraft today, the air moves in the following way: Clean outside air is sucked into the plane by the engine, heated, pressurized, cleaned, filtered, and then mixed with the original air in the cabin.

It is then distributed throughout different areas in the cabin (divided from 3 to 7 seat rows). After being breathed in by people, it becomes waste air, collected, and eventually expelled out of the cabin. This ventilation process allows for the removal of disease-causing viruses.

If the air vent is closed, the airflow slows down, making it easier for viruses to enter the human body.

Why you should not close the air vent on a plane?-1

Dr. Mark Gendreau, Lahey-Peabody Medical Center, USA, said: “To prevent the spread of viruses in the air, in addition to completely isolating the source, ventilation is the most important preventive measure as it is your primary means of control.

The air flows do not go from front to rear or from rear to front, but rather from different sections. The air environment for passengers typically spans around 2-5 rows before and after the seating area.”

According to Dr. Gendreau, the air conditioner’s ventilation system forms an air barrier around passengers, to some extent, blocking bacteria and expelling them out of the cabin more quickly. Keeping the air flowing is much more effective than using cleaning sprays and disinfectants.

Dr. Gendreau pointed out that it is thanks to the ventilation system that airplanes have a safer environment and better air quality compared to trains, buses, and subways. The most spacious seating area on a plane is in the front, as the air conditioning units are concentrated there.

Why you should never lean on the airplane window?

Revealed on The Sun, American flight attendant Linda Ferguson, who has been working for airlines for 24 years, said this is the dirtiest place on the plane because passengers often cough, sneeze, and touch the window with dirty hands or hair.

Linda advises that if you are sitting by the window and want to take a nap, it is best to use an antibacterial spray or wipes to clean the parts you will touch, including the window. Additionally, it is important to frequently wash your hands.

The window is not the only dirty place on the plane. The tray table, the magazine holder behind the seat, and other areas are rarely cleaned or tidied up between flights.

There have been instances where flight attendants found dirty socks, used vomit bags, chewing gum or candy wrappers, and even toenails or nails in the magazine pocket.

A former flight attendant warned on Reddit that many airlines require the crew to “turn around” the plane, meaning they can only pick up trash, fasten seat belts, put magazines in seat pockets, and then welcome new passengers without time to clean or tidy up anything else.
