Origin of World Teachers’ Day
On October 5, 1966, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, adopted the “Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers” (the first international document outlining the working conditions of teachers). The decision to choose October 5 as World Teachers’ Day was first celebrated in 1994, with the aim of honoring teachers’ organizations worldwide.
Significance of World Teachers’ Day
In addition to honoring and recognizing the contributions of teachers to education and the building of a global future, World Teachers’ Day, according to UNESCO, is also important evidence of awareness, empathy, and appreciation for teachers’ contributions to education and society as a whole.
World Teachers’ Day is an opportunity to enhance teachers’ capabilities, highlight the importance of the teaching profession in supporting and providing values to the global community at a time when humanity is striving for a sustainable society and quality education for all.

Theme of World Teachers’ Day
Since 1994, October 5th of each year has been designated as a day to celebrate and honor teachers worldwide. This year, 2023, October 5th falls on a Thursday.
The theme for World Teachers’ Day 2020 was “Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future.” The International Day was organized in collaboration with UNICEF, the International Labor Organization, and Education International. In 2023, continuing the spirit of International Teachers’ Day, the theme for 2023 will be updated in the coming period.
