Why does the pillow core turn yellow?
The pillow core is wrapped by a layer of pillowcase that is not thin, and this layer is also washed quite frequently, so why are there still yellow stains, mold spots, and unpleasant odors after a period of use?
The reason is that dead skin cells and sweat from the face and scalp, the layer of oil and cosmetics on the skin, dirt, bacteria in the bedroom… stick to the pillowcase and seep into the pillow core little by little every day. The pillowcase only slows down the appearance of stains on the pillow core rather than preventing this process.
Dirt, bacteria, fungal mold are the causes that irritate your skin, causing redness, acne and even more serious conditions such as asthma, allergic rhinitis.
Wash the pillow core with a washing machine
To make the pillow core clean and white, we cannot use detergent alone like washing clothes normally. You need to prepare additional whitening ingredients such as baking soda, dishwashing liquid, detergent (or laundry detergent), bleach. Mix a cleaning mixture consisting of baking soda, bleach, dishwashing liquid, detergent (or laundry detergent) in the ratio of 1:1:1:2. Then, put the pillow core into the washing machine, pay attention not to cram too many pillow cores inside the washing machine, making them unable to rotate.
Depending on the capacity of the machine, you can choose 2-3 pillow cores per time. Especially, you should place the pillow core upright along the axis of rotation, and there should be space between the pillows for more effective washing.
To maximize the effectiveness of the cleaning solution, choose the warm water washing mode and choose the normal washing procedure like washing clothes. The reason we choose warm water for washing is that warm water will increase the ability to remove stains on the pillow core.
With the normal washing process, after filling the machine with water and detergent, you should pause to soak the pillow for about 15-20 minutes. If the washing machine has a soaking mode, choose this mode for more effective pillow washing. Another note is not to hesitate to dry the pillow for a long time but choose the strong spin mode. Strong spin will cause the cotton layer inside the pillow core to twist.
With a top-loading washing machine, to prevent the pillow cores from twisting together after washing, you can put a tennis ball inside the washing machine.
After washing, just hang them in the sun to dry and you will have clean white pillow cores. Note that you should dry them under strong sunlight to completely avoid moisture and mold.
Things to note when cleaning the pillow core
– Do not use too strong cleaning agents to clean the pillow core to avoid damaging it.
– It is advisable to wash and dry the pillow core on sunny days, however, do not expose it directly to the sun but keep it in the shade to prevent the pillow core from changing color and reducing quality.
– Do not dry the pillow core at too high a temperature.
– Make sure the pillow core is completely dry before using it because using a damp pillow core can cause mold.
