The Pediatric Gynecology department of a hospital affiliated with the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine recently admitted a 10-year-old girl who was extremely thin and presented with an unusually large abdomen. Test results shocked many as the young girl tested positive for pregnancy. This is an extremely rare situation, leaving not only the medical staff but also the girl’s parents bewildered, while her body has not yet reached puberty.

“My daughter is usually very lively and active. She has always enjoyed good health. Except for frequent constipation, she basically has no other issues. How could her stomach have grown so big in such a short time? My daughter is only 10 years old and has never had a period, so how could she possibly be pregnant? This doesn’t make sense,” the bewildered mother stated.

However, after a thorough examination by the hospital’s gynecology director, the truth was revealed. It turned out that the young girl had a large tumor in her abdomen, originating from her ovaries. The positive pregnancy test was also due to the tumor, causing her belly to swell as if she were six months pregnant.

The doctors emphasized that pre-pubescent girls rarely undergo gynecological examinations. This type of tumor with initial symptoms can easily be overlooked. That’s why parents should not be negligent and must take their children for regular health check-ups, especially if they exhibit abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and long-term constipation.

Some time before her hospitalization, the girl started experiencing these symptoms. However, her family initially attributed them to common constipation due to weak intestinal peristalsis. To relieve their daughter’s discomfort, the parents took her for a children’s massage. During the massage, the therapist noticed the abnormal swelling in her abdomen and suggested that the parents take her to the hospital for a check-up.

Fortunately, after about 50 minutes of surgery, the doctors successfully removed the 2.5-kilogram tumor from the girl’s abdomen. Pathological testing confirmed it as a mixed germ cell tumor with malignant components, requiring subsequent chemotherapy.

“Ovarian germ cell tumors are a group of ovarian tumors originating from primitive germ cells. Fortunately, it was detected in time, and the tumor was removed in its early stages. With standard treatment in the later stages, the girl can fully recover” – the hospital director reassured and encouraged the girl’s family.

What are ovarian germ cell tumors?

According to the doctors at the Hospital of Chinese Medicine, ovarian germ cell tumors are a group of ovarian tumors that originate from primitive germ cells. They commonly occur in children and adolescents, with a pre-puberty incidence rate of 60%-90%, including teratomas, malignant tumors, and endocrine tumors, as well as cystic tumors.

Most ovarian tumors present no obvious symptoms, and some may exhibit symptoms such as constipation, abdominal distension, ascites, lower limb edema, or irregular menstruation. They are primarily detected through physical examinations, combined with tumor markers for diagnosis.

In reality, pre-pubescent children often do not undergo regular gynecological examinations, and the initial clinical symptoms of this type of tumor are not always apparent, making a missed diagnosis likely. Experts and doctors advise parents to be vigilant and take their daughters for periodic health check-ups.

In addition to considering digestive issues, parents should also be mindful of potential gynecological problems. Gynecological conditions can be challenging to manage, and early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid missing the best treatment opportunities.

Furthermore, an essential reminder from this scenario is that parents should be cautious when their children experience abdominal distension and pain. In this case, the girl was fortunate to encounter an experienced massage therapist. Blind or unskilled abdominal massage could have led to severe consequences, such as ovarian tumor rupture.
