Toilets are breeding grounds for germs and odors, hence the need for regular cleaning. Typically, households use chemical cleaners and deodorizers, but these products can be expensive and may contain harsh ingredients that raise health concerns.
The good news is that you can easily make your own natural, cost-effective toilet cleaning and deodorizing tablets.
DIY Tip: Make Your Own Toilet Cleaning and Deodorizing Tablets
You’ll need the following ingredients: 180g baking soda, 50g citric acid (available as lemon salt or sour salt), ½ teaspoon vinegar, 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide, and 15-20 drops of your favorite essential oil (preferably orange, lemon, or lemongrass). Gather tools like a tray or silicone ice cube mold, wax paper, a spoon, and a spray bottle.
Start by mixing baking soda and citric acid in a bowl. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and cleaner commonly used in households. Citric acid boosts the cleaning power and helps remove stains. In a separate container, combine vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, and pour this mixture into a spray bottle. If you don’t have a spray bottle, you can use a spoon to transfer the liquid to the baking soda mixture.
Slowly spray or spoon the liquid into the baking soda mixture, stirring continuously. Then, add the essential oil to the mixture and stir to combine. The essential oil has antibacterial properties and provides a pleasant fragrance. Mix thoroughly, and then test the consistency by squeezing a small amount in your hand. If it holds together, the mixture is ready for molding.
Use a spoon to scoop and shape the mixture into small, evenly sized tablets. Place them on a tray lined with wax paper. Alternatively, you can pour the mixture into a silicone ice cube tray and press firmly. After a few hours, pop the tablets out and let them air dry on a tray.
Let the tablets dry in a cool, ventilated area for at least four hours or overnight. Store the dried tablets in a sealed container and label it to avoid confusion with other products. To use, simply drop a tablet into the toilet, let it fizz and work its magic. Depending on the level of dirt, you can either flush immediately or scrub the toilet with a brush before flushing.
