Which lineage produced the most kings and national heroes in history, with 31 kings and 2 national heroes?

In the thousands of years of history of Vietnam, there was one family that had the most kings, the Le family, including the Early Le Dynasty (980-1009) and the Later Le Dynasty (1428-1789). With 31 Le kings and a 390-year reign over the country during the feudal period.

The Le family is one of the characteristic lineages of the Lac Viet people and has had a profound influence, having settled in the two regions of Thanh Hoa and Ninh Binh for a very long time until now. The Le kings and eminent persons are also countless. According to the book “100 Common Surnames in Vietnam” published by the Social Sciences Publishing House in 2022, the Le family accounts for 8.9% of the Vietnamese population.

Le Loi is a king respected by generations

In the history of our country, the Le family has founded the Le Dynasty twice. King Le Hoan was the initiator of the Early Le Dynasty (980 – 1009) and King Le Thai To (Le Loi) was the king who initiated the Later Le Dynasty. This dynasty lasted for almost a century and is considered one of the golden ages in Vietnamese history with its prosperity, cultural, educational and military development.

King Le Thanh Tong (1460 – 1497), one of the most famous kings in Vietnamese history, during his reign, the Le Dynasty reached its peak of prosperity. He carried out extensive administrative, educational and legal reforms, while expanding the territory to the south, shaping the culture and territory of Vietnam as it is today.

Moreover, in the history of the Le Dynasty, the king with the longest reign was King Le Hien Tong, who ruled for 46 years (1740 – 1786). However, the role of the Le king in this period was not clearly demonstrated. This was due to the development and dominance of the Trinh lords’ power. The king with the shortest reign was King Le Long Viet (Le Trung Tong, son of King Le Dai Hanh) for only 3 days. After that, his brother, Le Long Dinh, overthrew the throne and ascended the throne.

The Le family – The family with the most kings in Vietnamese history

The Le Dynasty officially collapsed in 1789 when Nguyen Hue (King Quang Trung) entered Thang Long, defeated the Qing army and ended the rule of the Le Trung Hung Dynasty. Although there were many short-lived restoration efforts, the Le Dynasty could not regain power, and this event marked the end of a more than 350-year-old royal line. This is the family with the most kings in Vietnamese history. At the same time, it is also the family with the longest reign, so if you are bearing the Le surname, it is something to be very proud of, isn’t it?
