Three Children, All Ill: Blamed by Her Husband’s Family as a “Comet”

The protagonist of this story is Mao Ju Fen, a native of a remote mountain village in Qujing City, Yunnan Province. Growing up in a society with backward ideologies, the young girl believed that a woman’s duty was to marry and bear children, fulfilling her role as a daughter-in-law.

When she came of age, Mao Ju Fen was introduced to a man much older than her. Her husband had an unhealthy lifestyle, addicted to smoking and heavy drinking. Despite her repeated pleas, he refused to change his ways, leaving her no choice but to accept it.

After their marriage, the pressure to bear children from her mother-in-law weighed heavily on Mao Ju Fen’s shoulders. Soon enough, she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy. Her husband’s family was overjoyed, hoping that he would be the one to carry on the family name. However, their happiness was short-lived. When the child turned one and still couldn’t walk or talk, the family took him for a check-up, only to be devastated by the results: he had cerebral palsy.

Mao Ju Fen was regarded as a “comet” by her husband’s family.

Despite their heartbreak, Mao Ju Fen’s desire for a healthy child led her husband and mother-in-law to pressure her into having more children. Over the next few years, she gave birth to two more children, but the miracle they hoped for never came. Both children were born with cerebral palsy, unable to speak clearly and walking with a stagger. The youngest, Mao Ying Hong, couldn’t walk or talk even at the age of three and could only crawl on the floor.

Having three children with illnesses turned Mao Ju Fen into a target of heavy criticism from her husband’s family. She was blamed as a “comet”, bringing bad luck to the family. Her mother-in-law and husband grew cold and resentful, making her life a series of dark and painful days.

Although she never doubted that her husband was the cause, Mao Ju Fen didn’t give up hope for her children’s treatment. However, the cost of treatment was too high, and her in-laws refused to pay, believing that the children’s condition was incurable and that buying crutches for them to walk with was enough.

Mao Ju Fen desperately sought treatment for her children.

As their differences piled up, Mao Ju Fen couldn’t take it anymore. After numerous fierce arguments, she decided to divorce, taking her sickest youngest child and leaving the suffocating home, in search of a new hope for her life.

Remarriage and the Shocking Discovery of the Truth

Alone with her young child in a strange big city, with no education or skills, Mao Ju Fen’s life was at a standstill. By chance, she stopped at a small roadside eatery, unaware that this would be the biggest turning point in her life.

The owner, Mr. Cao Youfu, saw the emaciated woman and her sick child and offered them a hot meal. Knowing her struggle, he didn’t hesitate to give her extra food to take home.

Touched by his kindness, Mao Ju Fen volunteered to work at the eatery. She took on any task, from cleaning to serving, with diligence and dedication.

Her sincerity moved Cao Youfu. From empathy, he gradually developed romantic feelings for the unfortunate woman. Despite knowing her sad past, he was determined to take care of her and her sick children as if they were his own.

Initially, Mao Ju Fen feared a repeat of the tragedy. She believed that she was the cause of her previous three children’s illnesses. But Cao Youfu didn’t mind; he was adamant about proving that love and sincere care could heal all wounds.

After their marriage, with her husband’s encouragement, Mao Ju Fen decided to undergo a comprehensive health check-up before trying for another baby. The results showed no abnormalities.

Mao Ju Fen’s fourth pregnancy resulted in a healthy baby boy.

And then, a miracle happened. She became pregnant for the fourth time and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. As she heard her baby’s first cry, tears of happiness flowed down the face of the mother who had endured so much pain.

It was then that Mao Ju Fen realized the bitter truth: the cause was not her, but her ex-husband’s heavy smoking and drinking habits, which had impacted the health of her previous children.

Even though they now had a healthy child, Mao Ju Fen and Cao Youfu didn’t abandon Mao Ying Hong, the youngest child with the most severe cerebral palsy. They actively sought treatment for him, hoping to improve his condition.

Both parents took care of their children together.

The couple also hoped that, if possible, they would find a way to treat their two older children. For now, they focus on taking good care of their children, working hard, and saving money for their treatment, wishing for their health and happiness.

Why Did the Husband’s Addiction to Smoking and Drinking Increase the Risk of Birth Defects in Their Children?

Mao Ju Fen’s story serves as a stark warning to young couples about the importance of pre-marital health checks and prenatal care. According to experts, pre-marital examinations can detect hereditary diseases or congenital defects that may affect the health of offspring.

Additionally, a father’s addiction to smoking and heavy drinking can directly impact the quality of their sperm, increasing the risk of birth defects in their children.

The toxins in cigarettes, such as nicotine and carbon monoxide, can damage DNA in sperm, reducing fertility and increasing the likelihood of genetic mutations.

Similarly, alcohol impairs sperm production, disrupts hormones, and raises the risk of having a child with neurological defects, cerebral palsy, or other developmental issues. When sperm carrying damaged genes fertilizes an egg, there is a higher chance of the fetus developing abnormally, leading to congenital defects or postnatal developmental disorders.
