The cam cara, with its unique red flesh, took the market by storm. Its eye-catching color and irresistible flavor made it an instant hit.
Originating from Australia, this variety of cam has been successfully cultivated and widely grown in Vietnam, particularly in Lam Dong province. During the harvest season, the deep green fruits hang heavily from the branches, their leaves intertwining with the smooth, round clusters of cam.
When ripe, the cams reveal a pinkish-red flesh that is juicy and sweet yet subtly tangy. With each fruit weighing approximately 250-300 grams, you’ll get about 3-4 cams per kilogram, and some exceptional ones might even give you 2 per kg.
According to surveys, the price of cam cara ranges from 30,000 to 60,000 VND per kilogram, depending on the time of purchase. Vendors attribute the origin of this cam to Lam Dong, where it is seedless, easy to peel, and even easier to eat. Its red flesh offers a delicate sweetness with a hint of tartness, and its aroma evokes comparisons to grapefruit and even carrot.
Ms. Thanh, a fruit seller in the online market, shared her experience: “Two years ago, during a trip to Dalat, I had the pleasure of tasting the cam cara. Intrigued by its unusual color and delightful flavor, I decided to find a supplier so I could sell it in Ho Chi Minh City.”
This cam variety has been successfully cultivated in Vietnam in recent years, providing a significant income source for many households.
On my first sale, I received an overwhelming response from customers. I remember selling 200 kilograms in just two days! Word-of-mouth spread, and soon, the cam cara became a well-known delicacy. If allowed to ripen fully, the flesh turns a deep red, the segments become juicier, and the rind transforms from green to yellow. However, due to continuous orders and requests for slightly unripe fruit, most of the cams in the garden are harvested when they are just starting to turn yellow.”
Research reveals that the cam cara is exceptionally rich in Vitamin C, boasting 150% more than other yellow cam varieties. This makes it an excellent choice for skin health and anti-aging. Additionally, the cam cara has been found to have a lower acid content compared to other cams.
Beyond the fresh fruit, the market also offers cam cara seedlings for those who wish to grow their own or use them as ornamental plants. While the cam cara can be grown year-round, the ideal planting period is from April to June, as the trees tend to thrive better during the rainy season than in the dry season.
With proper care, the cam cara tree can bear fruit within 30 months of planting.
One of the standout features of the red-fleshed cam is its longevity, with a lifespan of up to 40-50 years and year-round productivity. By the third year, a single cam cara tree can yield around 50 kilograms of fruit, and by the fourth year, that number can climb to 100 kilograms. Fortunately, the cam cara is relatively low-maintenance and does not require sophisticated farming techniques. However, it’s essential to maintain a minimum distance of 4 to 5 meters between trees and ensure proper soil moisture and an 80-centimeter hole width during planting.
