In Japan, jackfruit seeds are sold for over $9 USD per kilogram, equivalent to nearly 1kg of beef in Vietnam. The Japanese carefully package these seeds and sell them in various supermarkets across the country. This high value is attributed to the Japanese appreciation for the seeds’ rich nutritional benefits.

Studies show that jackfruit seeds offer numerous beauty benefits for women, as they are rich in thiamine and riboflavin, which promote healthy eyes, skin, and hair. Additionally, these seeds contain trace minerals like zinc, iron, calcium, copper, potassium, and magnesium, which can aid in digestive health. Consuming jackfruit seeds helps the digestive system function more smoothly, often noticeable by increased flatulence.

Some studies suggest that jackfruit seeds may possess anti-cancer properties due to their plant compounds and antioxidants. A recent in vitro study found that jackfruit seed extract reduced the formation of cancer cells in blood vessels by 61%.

Traditional medicine practitioner Bùi Đắc Sáng (Hanoi Oriental Medicine Association) explains that jackfruit seeds have a sweet, nutty flavor and act on the spleen and stomach meridians. In traditional medicine, they are used to tonify the middle, benefit qi, strengthen the body, reduce qi stagnation, and promote digestion. They are also used to detoxify the colon, as their high fiber content prevents constipation and enhances digestion.

Beyond digestive health, ancient Chinese traditional medicine utilized jackfruit seeds to enhance sexual function and treat digestive disorders. Historical records also mention their use in improving sexual and reproductive health.

However, caution is advised when consuming jackfruit seeds. Raw seeds contain tannins and trypsin inhibitors, which can hinder nutrient absorption and digestion. Therefore, it is recommended to consume jackfruit seeds only after cooking methods such as boiling, steaming, roasting, or baking.

In addition to digestive and reproductive benefits, jackfruit seeds offer other health advantages. Illustrative photo.

Beyond the aforementioned benefits, here are additional advantages of jackfruit seeds as advised by practitioner Bùi Đắc Sáng:

Prevents anemia: Consuming jackfruit seeds once or twice a week increases iron levels in the body. Iron is essential for hemoglobin production, which helps red blood cells transport oxygen to organs. Jackfruit seeds are beneficial for those with low hemoglobin, reducing anemia risk and boosting energy and blood circulation for brain health.

Fights cancer: Jackfruit is rich in vitamin C, a nutrient that helps the body combat viruses and bacteria. Vitamin C strengthens the immune system by supporting white blood cell function.

Builds lean muscle: For those seeking lean, strong muscles, jackfruit seeds are an excellent choice. They are high in protein, with plant-based proteins considered more beneficial than animal proteins. Jackfruit seed proteins are cholesterol-free.

Aids weight loss: Jackfruit seeds are high in fiber and low in calories, making them an ideal food for weight loss.
