Previously, I have attempted various methods to store vegetables in the refrigerator compartment, but they only remain fresh for about 7 – 10 days. However, by using the simple and economical technique of wrapping vegetables in cotton fabric, I can extend their lifespan to over 1 month. This method is particularly useful for busy housewives who may not have the time to frequently visit the market.
To follow this method, please follow these steps:
Step 1: Thoroughly dry the vegetables (without washing). For leafy vegetables, remove any rotten stems. If the roots are dirty, clean them with a cloth.
Step 2: Find thick cotton fabric pieces that have good moisture absorption. You can repurpose old clothes or towels for wrapping the vegetables. If the fabric is thin, it is recommended to wrap the vegetables in 2 or 3 layers for enhanced moisture absorption and freshness.
Step 3: Place the wrapped vegetables in a tightly covered box and store it in the refrigerator compartment. If you don’t have a box, you can simply wrap the fabric around the vegetables and place them in the refrigerator compartment or vegetable storage compartment.
Step 4: Use adhesive tape to label the name of the vegetables on the fabric and the outside of the box for easy identification.
Note: If you are using a box, it is advisable to line the bottom with plastic or a plastic box lid to create a gap between the vegetables and the bottom of the box. This helps keep the vegetables and fabric dry and breathable, and prevents water retention.
By utilizing this fabric preservation method, leafy vegetables can be kept fresh for up to 3 weeks, while root vegetables can be stored for over 1 month. It is recommended to consume leafy vegetables first, as they will still remain fresh and delicious after 1 – 2 weeks.
