Not only does the mattress remain wet for a long time, but the “contaminated” area also retains an unpleasant odor for a long time. Therefore, if you have young children, you should pay attention to the following small tips for odor removal from the mattress.
Use water and 90-degree alcohol
Almost every family has a bottle of 90-degree alcohol at home, and this is a very useful ingredient for odor removal as well as removing yellow stains on the mattress. As soon as you discover the child has wet the bed, soak up all the urine with water by pouring it into the area with urine and then use a dry cloth to place it on top, pressing firmly.
After the mattress has been drained, spray alcohol on the mattress, wet blanket then let it dry naturally. In case the child has wet the bed for a long time before you discover it, perform the same steps as above but repeat the water pushing step out with a dry cloth multiple times.
Use baking soda
First, remove the mattress cover, use a wet paper towel to place it on the old yellow stains caused by the baby’s urine. If it’s a fresh stain, use a dry cloth to press on the mattress to absorb the urine. After this step, pour baking soda onto the mattress and leave it for 2 minutes.
After 2 minutes, use a vacuum cleaner to remove all the baking soda from the mattress. If you do not have a vacuum cleaner, you can use a cloth to wipe away the baking soda.
– Next, spray vinegar on the area where the baking soda was removed to eliminate this odor and let the mattress dry naturally, do not take it out to dry in the sun as it can damage the mattress. After it is dry, put the mattress cover back on. For stains that have been there for a long time, you should persist in cleaning according to the above steps 2 to 3 times for a complete clean.
Use dishwashing liquid and cornstarch
If you don’t have baking soda in the kitchen, you can replace it with cornstarch and dishwashing liquid. Moms need to prepare: Water, cornstarch, vinegar, vacuum cleaner, dishwashing liquid, paper towel. There are 3 methods to use these ingredients to remove stains and odor caused by your child’s urine.
Method 1, mix cornstarch and water into a thick paste and then pour it on the wet area where the child has wet the bed, wait until this mixture dries then use the vacuum cleaner to remove all the dried mixture. Method 2, immediately use a paper towel on the area where the child has wet the bed, then soak the mixture of 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1 liter of warm water on the area with urine, this mixture will dissolve the urine and eliminate the odor on the mattress. Wait a few hours for it to dry, then use a paper towel or a soft cloth to clean it.
The last method is to pour a mixture of half a cup of white vinegar and 1.5 cups of dishwashing liquid on the wet area and let them soak into the mattress for 30 minutes, then sprinkle some cornstarch on top to absorb the remaining water. Cornstarch also helps reduce the smell of urine on the mattress, then just use the vacuum cleaner to remove the dried cornstarch.
Notes when dealing with urine on the mattress:
– For long-standing urine stains, the above steps need to be repeated several times to be effective.
– If you want it to dry quickly, you should only use a fan instead of drying it in the sun to ensure the longevity of the mattress. Absolutely avoid using an iron to shorten the drying time as high temperatures can damage your mattress.
– After eliminating the smell of urine, you can use baby perfume to spray on the wet area. Avoid spraying before carrying out the above steps as the scent of the perfume mixed with the smell of the baby’s urine will be extremely unpleasant.
– Dealing with the urine on the bed or mattress early will save you effort and prevent conditions for hidden bacteria. As soon as the baby wets the bed, it is best to use a towel to absorb the water and step on it firmly to push the urine into the towel.
