Long-term storage, especially under hot weather conditions, can cause rice to become moldy and infested, reducing the quality of the rice and impacting the health of consumers or resulting in wastage.

To prevent this situation, let’s learn how to properly store rice and follow the tips below.

The harmful effects of rice weevils

Rice weevils are considered to be the most destructive species due to their long lifespan and ability to fly. They cause harm and affect the quality of rice and the health of consumers.

The presence of rice weevils in rice indicates that the grains are contaminated. They consume a portion of the rice, creating holes and causing the rice to spoil, reducing the quality of the rice due to the unpleasant odor.

Consuming rice that has been infested with weevils can impact human health, leading to conditions such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, or fever.

Methods to store rice without rice weevils

Tea leaves

Storing rice with tea leaves is a traditional method because tea contains a large amount of phenol which emits an unpleasant gas. Not only does it inhibit the growth of insects in the rice, but it also helps prevent the rice from becoming musty.

Usually, 10 kg of rice can be stored with 10 grams of green tea leaves in a cloth bag.

Garlic

When you buy dried garlic, peel off the outer layer and place it in the rice container. Typically, 2 whole bulbs of garlic can be added to 10 kg of rice.

Although garlic is effective in repelling insects, over time it will wither. Therefore, you should replace the garlic every month to have a better effect in repelling insects.

Dried citrus peel
After eating citrus fruits, save the peels and dry them for 3-5 days to use as a rice storage material.

Add 2-3 pieces of dried citrus peel for every 20 kg of rice. This not only effectively repels insects in the house but also prevents rice weevils from infesting the rice.
