What is the most energy-efficient temperature setting to use the air conditioning at night? It took me more than 10 years to find out.

Many people believe that setting the air conditioner temperature higher can save electricity, so they often turn on the air conditioner at a temperature of 29-30 degrees at night. Is this true?

On hot days, the demand for air conditioning increases, causing skyrocketing electricity bills and putting a strain on your wallet. That’s why using air conditioning in the most energy-efficient way possible is a topic that many people are concerned about.

What is the most energy-efficient temperature to set the air conditioning at night?

Many people believe that the higher the air conditioning temperature, the more energy you save, so they often set the temperature at 29 – 30 degrees at night. However, this belief is not entirely correct.

In fact, the energy-saving efficiency of air conditioning at temperatures of 28 degrees, 29 degrees, or 30 degrees depends on the temperature inside the room compared to the outside temperature, which will give us different answers.

Experts say that air conditioning is most effective when the condenser temperature is below 48 degrees Celsius and the room temperature is above 19 degrees Celsius. The most energy-efficient setting is when the room temperature is only 6 to 10 degrees Celsius lower than the outside temperature.

For example, if the outside temperature is around 40 degrees Celsius, setting the air conditioning at 30 degrees Celsius will help save electricity while still keeping the room cool. If the temperature is set to 25 degrees Celsius, the air conditioning will have to work at full capacity, undoubtedly consuming more electricity.

If the outside temperature is only around 30 – 35 degrees Celsius, you should set the air conditioning to a temperature ranging from 26 – 28 degrees to save energy. Setting the air conditioning at 30 degrees Celsius will cause the outdoor unit to constantly turn on and off, and each time it starts, it will consume a considerable amount of electricity.

Furthermore, at night, you should use the Sleep mode to protect your health and save electricity. When you set this mode, about 30 minutes to 1 hour later, the temperature will automatically increase by 1 degree Celsius, and then continue to increase by 2 degrees Celsius to maintain that temperature.

For example, if you set the temperature to 26 degrees Celsius before going to sleep, after half an hour or an hour, the air conditioning will increase the temperature to 27 degrees Celsius. And after another 2 hours, it will continue to increase by 2 degrees to balance with the outside temperature. This will prevent you from feeling cold in the middle of the night (as the temperature usually decreases at night), helping you sleep better and save a significant amount of electricity.

Some tips for saving electricity when using air conditioning

– Choose an inverter air conditioner if you frequently use air conditioning, and make sure the capacity is suitable for the room size. Overcapacity will lead to wastage, and undercapacity will not guarantee sufficient cooling.

– Install the outdoor unit of the air conditioner in a well-ventilated location, as high temperatures will increase the compressor’s power consumption.

– Do not keep the air conditioner running continuously 24/7, as it can shorten the lifespan of the air conditioner and increase the risk of electrical problems, such as short circuits or fires.

– Use a fan together with the air conditioner to save a significant amount of energy.

– Avoid frequently turning the air conditioner on and off.

– Limit opening the room door to reduce heat exchange between the room and the outside environment.

– Regularly clean and maintain the air conditioner, preferably every 6 months.

– Turn off the air conditioner 30 minutes before leaving to make the most of the remaining cool air in the room.

– Do not set the temperature below 20 degrees Celsius, as a large temperature difference between the inside and outside of the room can be harmful to your health and consume more energy.
