Drink More Water

Our bodies are made up of 60% water, and the skin is the largest organ of the body. Hydrating from within is even more effective than hydrating from the outside in keeping the skin well-nourished.

Exfoliate

Proper exfoliation, both physical (gentle exfoliation) and chemical (with alpha-hydroxy acid, retinoids), allows any moisturizer or serum to be easily absorbed into the skin.

Moisturize

Dry skin is a type of skin that lacks oil and is often dry all over the face and body. Both dehydrated and dry skin can lead to irritated or sensitive areas, so moisturizing and hydrating products are important when tackling winter weather.

Here are three skincare recipes:

1. Spritz throughout the day with a facial mist.

This facial mist provides a good pH balance for our skin and also helps us absorb essential minerals and water. Adding a few drops of essential oil like lavender or chamomile can provide additional relaxation.

2. Apply a weekly moisturizing honey mask.

This moisturizing mask is a great remedy for dry skin and can be applied while soaking in a bath.

– 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil (about 3 vitamin E capsules)

– 1 teaspoon honey

– ¼ avocado

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and apply to the face and neck for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. Follow with a serum and moisturizer.

Create a Moisturizing Oil

– Almond oil

– Choose one of the following essential oils for your skin type: Chamomile for sensitive/red/itchy skin, lavender for dry or inflamed skin, ylang ylang for oily or uneven skin tone.

Add 6 drops of essential oil for every 30 ml of almond oil. Keep the oil in a dark glass bottle to preserve its effectiveness. Use on clean skin 1-2 times a day. You should also use sun protection measures during the day.

Protect Your Skin

When outdoors, shield your skin from the wind by protecting it with a scarf, hat, mask, and gloves. Avoid using excessively hot water, even in the freezing cold mornings when you’ll feel inclined to start the day with a steamy shower.

Even on cloudy and gloomy days, continue to use SPF sunscreen. You can still get skin damage from UVA, UVB, and other wavelengths during winter time, regardless of the lack of sunlight.

Lip Balm

Don’t go to bed without lip balm! Lips can become cracked and chapped in the winter months, and moisture retention can be accomplished through lip balm or moisturizing lipsticks.

If you’re used to using gel or foaming facial cleansers, try switching to a cream cleanser instead.
