Due to its convenience and the ability to limit oil, air fryers are currently highly favored by families. Along with that, how to clean an air fryer to ensure cleanliness, long-lasting and efficient operation without affecting the quality of the food is something that many people are interested in.

In fact, due to its specific structure, comprehensive cleaning of an air fryer after each use is not as simple as a normal pot. Below are some notes and instructions on how to clean this “kitchen friend” in the most scientific and effective way, as recommended by Tintuconline:

Things not to do when cleaning an air fryer

Before starting to clean each specific part of the air fryer, there are 2 important notes that users must remember:

1 – Do not use metal utensils, steel wool, or abrasive sponges to scrub and clean the air fryer

The reason is that most air fryers have a non-stick coating and anything hard, sharp, or corrosive can scratch this coating. When cooking, the food will stick, burn, and affect the quality of the food as well as the health of the user.

2 – Do not immerse the air fryer in water

In reality, some parts still have to be removed and cleaned in water (or in the dishwasher) such as the frying tray and frying basket. However, the remaining main parts are electrical devices or related to electrical devices (the main body of the fryer, control knobs, heating elements, air fan…) should never be immersed in water. If that happens, then you have contributed to damaging the air fryer.

Safe and effective cleaning process for an air fryer

► Tools to prepare:

•    Cotton cloth or small fiber cloth

•    Non-abrasive sponge

•    Baking soda

•    Soft-bristle brush or toothbrush

•    Dish soap

► Cleaning process:

1. Unplug the device

Turn off the air fryer, unplug it, and let it cool down. This process takes about 30 minutes but it will cool down faster if you remove the frying basket and frying tray from the main device.

2. Initially clear the inside and outside

Use a damp cotton cloth or small fiber cloth to wipe the outside of the device. Then use hot water and a non-abrasive sponge to wipe the inside of the device.

3. Clean the heating elements

Turn the air fryer upside down to get a clear view of the heating elements. Use a non-abrasive sponge or soft cloth to clean those parts.

4. Remove dry food residue

If there is hard, stuck-on food residue that does not come off the main part – outside, inside, or on the heating elements, create a paste mixture from baking soda and water. Then use this mixture to scrub the stains with a non-abrasive sponge or soft brush, then wipe clean with a cotton cloth or small fiber cloth.

5. Clean the frying basket and tray

Most air fryer brands design the basket and tray to be dishwasher safe, so all you have to do is put them in the dishwasher and run a normal cycle. Even without a dishwasher, cleaning the frying basket and tray is quite simple like other regular kitchen utensils with hot water, dish soap, and a non-abrasive sponge or soft cloth.

6. Soak the basket and tray

If the frying basket and tray have hard residue that is predicted to be difficult to clean or have not been completely cleaned in step 4, pour hot water into the tray, place the basket into it and soak for about 10 minutes, then use a non-abrasive sponge to clean. Repeat as necessary.

7. Dry all parts

Let all cleaned parts dry in the air for a few hours or use a clean cotton cloth to dry the main device, basket, and tray. Then reassemble everything and you’re done.

► Some useful tips during the use of an air fryer

– If you want to prevent the frying basket from getting burnt or difficult to clean, you can grease or line it with an absorbent paper or silver paper before cooking.

– The food cooked in an air fryer should be properly proportioned and make sure it is not too full but covers the entire frying basket. If left like that, it will block the airflow inside the fryer, leaving the food undercooked, unevenly cooked, and harmful to the fryer.

– If your air fryer starts to smell, put half a lemon into the frying basket or a little lemon juice into the tray. Leave it for about 20 to 30 minutes then clean and drain.
