Mint basil is a herb belonging to the mint family, originating from Iran, Central Asia, and Europe. The leaves of mint basil have been used as a medicinal remedy by ancient Greeks for many centuries. Here are the benefits that mint basil tea brings.

Lower Blood Sugar, Prevent Diabetes

Mint basil tea has been proven by scientists to be able to reduce blood sugar levels and oxidative stress associated with diabetes due to its abundant antioxidant content. In addition, mint basil extract is believed to have the ability to inhibit glucose synthesis in the body, leading to decreased blood sugar levels.

A small-scale study in patients with type 2 diabetes showed that taking mint basil extract capsules daily for 12 weeks significantly reduced fasting blood sugar levels, neutral fat, and inflammatory markers.

Improve Sleep Quality

Rosmarinic acid in mint basil is a compound that has been shown by scientists at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (Iran) to improve sleep in people with insomnia. A 2021 study also discovered its benefits in reducing the risk of depression, anxiety, and chronic insomnia in people with chronic chest pain.

Enhance Mood and Cognitive Function

A study on 25 adults found that mint basil helps reduce anxiety and stress. Participants in this study consumed a sweet drink containing mint basil extract. As a result, this group experienced reduced stress and improved mood compared to the placebo group.

In addition, mint basil is also effective in treating headaches, especially tension headaches, due to its relaxing properties, relieving tension and muscle relaxation through the mechanism of opening and relaxing constricted blood vessels, reducing restlessness and insomnia.

This type of tea also contains antioxidants that help slow down the process of cognitive decline, prevent chronic neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Good for Digestive System

A study conducted in 2010 found that people who ate desserts with mint basil essential oil or consumed mint basil tea could reduce symptoms of indigestion and bloating. Therefore, mint basil helps reduce nausea.

In addition, mint basil has also been proven to enhance liver function, reduce pain and inflammation, and fight against certain types of viruses for disease prevention. Research using extracts from this plant’s leaves showed control over 13 bacterial species and 6 fungal species.

Instructions on how to make mint basil tea and precautions

To make mint basil tea, prepare 5 grams of dried mint basil leaves or 20 grams of fresh leaves, 3 grams of dried green tea or 10 grams of fresh tea, 1 fresh lemon, and 2 tablespoons of honey (optional).
