Causes of acne on the back and body
The main cause of acne is the oil glands located beneath the skin (except for the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet). Under certain conditions, these oil glands will produce an excess of sebum, leading to acne. Clogged hair follicles provide a breeding ground for bacteria, which can cause inflammation and infection.
Bacteria can easily accumulate on the back and chest because these areas come into direct contact with dirty clothing, especially sweat. Additionally, yeasts are a common type of fungus found on the skin but only cause acne when they abnormal levels of growth.
Fungal acne, unlike bacterial acne, requires a different treatment approach and is often treated with antifungal medication prescribed by a doctor.
Preventing and treating acne on the body
Maintain personal hygiene
Choose loose-fitting, breathable clothing to allow the skin to “breathe” and better absorb sweat. Avoid tight-fitting clothes made of materials like nylon and polyester, as they can trap heat and sweat.
Be cautious with shared items at the gym
Be sure to shower after exercising to remove dirt and bacteria. It’s best to use a personal towel instead of a shared towel when at the gym.
Another tip is to wear a t-shirt over your workout clothes to protect your skin from coming into contact with bacteria.
Use therapeutic body wash
Instead of using regular soap or body wash, opt for products specifically designed to cleanse acne-prone skin. These specialty body washes contain active ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, which helps eliminate bacteria on the skin’s surface.
Salicylic acid is another ingredient used to treat fungal acne by reducing clogged hair follicles.
Body acne spray
Applying acne treatment creams is essential, but it can be challenging to reach areas like the back unless you are accustomed to doing so or have assistance. Acne sprays are a quick and convenient solution that you may consider.
Regular exfoliation
Gentle exfoliation can help reduce fungal acne and fade the discoloration left by these types of acne scars. Chemical exfoliation is milder compared to physical exfoliation with granular scrub and causes less irritation to acne-prone skin. However, be mindful of sensitive skin to avoid worsening the condition.
Hair, purse straps, and jewelry can also be acne triggers
If you have acne in these areas, it’s recommended to tie your hair up. Jewelry, purse straps, and backpacks can also harbor bacteria and cause acne due to friction and skin irritation. If you have body acne, it’s best to avoid wearing jewelry to prevent contact with affected areas.
Carrying a handbag or backpack is unavoidable, but wearing clothing that covers the affected areas at least will provide some coverage and reduce the chance of developing acne.
