According to AFP, Thailand is dealing with a wave of ‘elephant pants’ from China. Thailand claims copyright to the distinctive elephant patterned pants and has ordered increased monitoring of counterfeit pants imported from China.

“The regulation to monitor pants with elephant patterns has been issued at all ports”, said Thai Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on February 6th. Thin cotton pants with elephant patterns have long been a popular souvenir for Western tourists visiting this Southeast Asian country.

Youth in Thailand also favor this style of pants, but a recent surge of cheap elephant pants from China has raised concerns about imported pants overshadowing domestic ones, drawing attention in Bangkok.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham, who is also the Minister of Commerce, declared that Thailand holds the exclusive design rights for elephant pants. “Thai pants are standardized. Allowing foreign countries to produce them would affect the domestic product,” he said, warning of poor quality and easily torn imported pants after a few wears.
Thai elephant pants, mostly produced in Chiang Mai, have wide legs and a comfortable design for hot weather, making them popular among foreigners. The pants come in over 10 designs, with more than 200 patterns.

These pants are sold at stalls in Thailand for around $4. With the new trend among the youth, retailers have started designing some premium models priced up to $30. However, elephant pants from China are priced at only around $0.84.
