Facial steaming is a method of exposing the facial skin to warm, moist air to cleanse, release trapped sebum, and hydrate the skin. It also helps to deeply cleanse, moisturize the skin, promote blood circulation, and remove toxins. Moreover, not only your skin but also your mind will feel extremely relaxed during the steaming process.
The Harm of Improper Facial Steaming
– Steaming is not suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive skin. The heat can cause irritation and inflammation.
– Over-steaming can lead to dry and flaky skin as the natural oils are stripped away.
– Improper steaming can cause burns. Maintaining a safe distance from the steam source is mandatory.
– Steaming can trigger inflammation and activate bacteria for some skin types prone to acne or inflammation. Therefore, those with skin conditions such as freckles, eczema, or acne should be cautious.
– Prolonged steaming can increase blood flow to the surface of the skin, resulting in a flushed appearance.
Notes:
• Before steaming: Drink a glass of water and cleanse your face. Gently exfoliate with a mild cleanser to prepare your skin to receive the full benefits of the steam.
• During steaming: Keep your eyes closed for added comfort and to prevent eyelid irritation from the steam. Maintain a safe distance of about 20cm between your face and the steamer. Alternatively, you can use a facial steamer—follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
• After steaming: Rinse your face with warm water and pat it dry. Avoid rubbing your skin with a towel; instead, gently pat it dry. Apply a face mask, moisturizer, or serum post-steam. Don’t forget to gently massage your forehead, cheeks, and neck with your fingers, moving upward to enhance product absorption.
Suggested Facial Steaming Techniques
Hot Water from a Bowl
Boil a pot of water and pour it into a ceramic bowl. Cover your head and the bowl with a towel to trap the steam. Tie your hair back before steaming. Lean over the bowl, being mindful to maintain a safe distance to avoid burns. Steam your face for 5 to 10 minutes.
Using a Warm Towel
– Place a small, clean towel in a bowl.
– Pour hot (not boiling) water over the towel.
– Wring out the towel and apply it to your face for 5–10 minutes.
Steaming with a Facial Steamer
Use distilled water. Place the steamer on a table near an outlet, plug it in, and wait for the steam to rise. Sit comfortably and position your face as directed. Steam for at least 5 minutes but no more than 10. Maintain a safe distance from the steam.
