With her growing baby bump, H’Hen Niê opted for business-class seats to ensure a comfortable journey. “I’m thrilled about this trip and can’t wait to immerse myself in the local culture, cuisine, and interact with the people,” she shared.
One of the first stops on the couple’s itinerary was the ancient town of Shifen in the outskirts of Taipei. H’Hen Niê described Shifen as a beloved spot for tourists to release sky lanterns and marvel at the train passing through the village.
Located about 32 kilometers from Taipei, Shifen served as the backdrop for the movie ‘The Pursuit of Happiness.’ It evokes memories of the scene where Kha Jing Dong and Shen Jiayi released sky lanterns together. Many Vietnamese celebrities, including Diễm My 9X, Midu, Minh Hằng, and Chi Pu, have visited and checked in at this famous spot.
Shifen exudes an old-world charm, from its narrow alleys to the nostalgic architecture of its houses. Nestled along the Pingxi railway line, Shifen was once a hub for agriculture and rubber cultivation. The area also boasted abundant coal resources, leading to the construction of the railway.
The Shifen Train Station, inaugurated in 1918, became the largest station on the Pingxi line. During its heyday, it was the most prominent coal mining site and boasted the highest population in the Pingxi district of Taipei. However, with the decline of the coal industry in the 1970s, tourism emerged as the region’s primary industry.
Visitors are enthralled by the experience of releasing sky lanterns, a symbolic and captivating activity in Shifen. They write their wishes on colorful lanterns and let them soar into the sky. However, as the railway is still occasionally operational, tourists are advised to exercise caution when walking on the tracks.
Tuấn Khôi shared that this trip was filled with “firsts.” “It’s our first time in Shifen, our first time writing our wishes on a lantern and watching it soar, and most specially, it’s our first time exploring this enchanting place with two adorable mother and child,” the photographer enthused.
H’Hen Niê and her husband posed playfully, with Tuấn Khôi standing on tiptoe to appear taller than his pregnant wife. Throughout the journey, he also took on the roles of cameraman and photographer for his spouse.
The houses along the Pingxi railway line are mostly lantern shops, souvenir stores, and eateries. The best way to reach Shifen is by train to Ruifang Station, then transferring to the Pingxi line and disembarking at Shifen.
Not far from the ancient town is the majestic Shifen Waterfall, dubbed the ‘Niagara of Taiwan.’ It’s an ideal spot to include in your itinerary for a breathtaking natural experience.
H’Hen Niê announced her pregnancy with her first child on May 30th. Since then, she has actively participated in artistic endeavors, often accompanied by her supportive husband. At home, Tuấn Khôi also takes on the role of chef, preparing nutritious meals for his expectant wife.
