1. Basic Pie Charts in Word
1.1. 2D Pie Chart
The 2D pie chart is the most commonly used chart because of its simplicity. This type of chart is used to report and represent the percentage distribution of content in Word easily.

2. How to Draw a Pie Chart in Word
Step 1: In the Word application, open the Insert tab ⇒ click on Chart
Step 2: Now the Insert Chart dialog box appears ⇒ select Pie ⇒ select the type of chart you want to draw.
Step 3: The pie chart is added to Word, and above the chart is a spreadsheet. You enter the data you want to display on the pie chart into the spreadsheet.
- After entering the data into the spreadsheet, close the spreadsheet. If you want to change the data in the spreadsheet, right-click on the chart and select Edit Data.
Step 4: Edit the chart
Edit the chart title:
- If you see an empty space for the chart title, enter the chart title you want to represent.
- If you don’t see an empty space, click on the chart and select the Chart Elements icon, a green plus sign, then check the Chart Title box to display the chart title and enter the title you want.
Move and resize the pie chart:
- Move the pie chart: You can adjust the position of the pie chart by alignment or by clicking and dragging the chart to the desired position on the Word page.
- Resize the pie chart: Click on the chart, and now the chart displays 8 dots around the chart border. Move the mouse cursor to one of these 8 dots. The dots will appear as double-sided arrows, press and hold the left mouse button to resize the chart as desired.
Add data labels to the chart:
- Click on the chart ⇒ click on the Chart Elements icon (blue plus sign) ⇒ check the Data Labels box to add data labels to the pie chart.
- If you want to change the position of the data label on the chart, click on the triangle icon next to Data Labels ⇒ select the position you want to move the data label.
Add a legend to the chart:
- Similar to adding data labels to the pie chart, click on the Chart Elements icon ⇒ check the Legend box to add a legend to the chart ⇒ click on the black triangle icon and select the position where you want to display the chart legend.
Change the style and color of the chart:
- Click on Chart Styles (pen icon) -> select the chart style you want to represent. Also, you can click on the chart ⇒ click on the Design tab ⇒ select the chart style you want in the Chart Styles section.
Quickly change the layout of the chart:
- To change the position and display of components on the chart, click on the chart ⇒ click on the Design tab in the toolbar ⇒ click on Quick Layout ⇒ select the layout you want to change.
Separate one or more slices from the chart:
- If you want to separate a slice from the pie chart, click on the slice you want to separate in the chart ⇒ press and hold the left mouse button to drag the slice to the desired position.
- When you separate all slices of the pie chart ⇒ right-click on the pie chart ⇒ select Format Data Series. Now the Format Data Series section appears on the right side of the chart. You can adjust the Pie Explosion slider to separate all slices of the pie chart as desired.
