Pillows are often overlooked during laundry days, but they can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria and unsightly stains, especially during the summer when sweat and body oils accumulate nightly. While many people believe that bleach is the most effective way to clean, a cleaning expert claims otherwise.
Bleach Makes Stains Harder to Remove
Katie Berry, founder of “Housewife How Tos” and a household cleaning expert, reveals: “Bleach cannot remove oils. Instead, it can set stains, making them even harder to wash out and even permanent.”
She shares that she has experimented with various methods to tackle stubborn pillow stains and eventually discovered a simple, three-ingredient natural formula that rivals the results of strip washing while being gentler and safer for the fabric.

Three “Magic” Ingredients for Pillow Cleaning
Surprisingly, all you need can be found in your kitchen:
Dish soap: Effective in cutting through oils, the primary culprit of those unsightly yellow stains on your pillows.
Baking soda: Gently brightens and effectively deodorizes, restoring freshness to your pillows.
Hot water: Boosts the cleaning power when combined with the above ingredients.
Simple Execution
Create a washing solution: Pour very hot water into a sink or bathtub, then add 240g of baking soda and 60ml of dish soap. Stir well to dissolve.
Soak and scrub pillows: Place the pillows in the solution, gently scrub by hand or rub two pillows together for extra friction.
Rinse in clean water: Drain the old water, refill with fresh water, and add a few drops of dish soap. Soak the pillows for at least 1 hour, ideally overnight.
The result is pillows that are not only stain-free and devoid of sweat and oil stains but also refreshed and pleasantly scented—all without the need for harsh chemicals like bleach.
Note: Implement this method periodically every few months to maintain clean pillows and prolong their lifespan.
