Potatoes are a nutritious food, good for your health. With potatoes as the main ingredient, you can use them to prepare many delicious dishes such as soup, fried, stir-fried, baked, and grilled… Each dish brings its own unique flavor, suitable for the taste of many people.
Many families have a habit of buying potatoes to store and use gradually. However, if you don’t know how to store them properly, potatoes will turn green or sprout. At this time, harmful substances will be produced in potatoes, which are not good for health and should not be consumed.
To prevent potatoes from sprouting, you can refer to the following storage methods.
Store with plastic wrap
If you only buy a small amount of potatoes (about less than 1kg), this method is very suitable.
Prepare plastic wrap and tightly wrap each potato, squeeze out all the air inside. Put the potatoes in a black plastic bag or paper bag to avoid light. Store the potatoes in a dry, cool place. This method will prevent photosynthesis in potatoes, making them unable to sprout.
Store potatoes with baking soda
Baking soda can prevent potatoes from turning green and prevent them from sprouting. First, prepare a clean, dry paper box. Sprinkle a handful of baking soda at the bottom of the box.
Place the potatoes in the box one by one, then cover them with paper towels or old newspapers. Paper towels have good moisture absorption. They will keep the potatoes dry.
Close the box and store it in a dry, cool place.
Store potatoes with apples
Prepare a box, neatly arrange the potatoes inside and add apples to the box. Apples release ethylene gas, which inhibits the sprouting of potatoes. Close the box tightly and store it in a dry, cool place. Occasionally, open the box to check and replace the apples if they are rotten.
Note that when storing potatoes, you should not wash them. Water will cause the potatoes to rot quickly. If you want to clean the dirt on the outside of the potato, you should only use a cloth to wipe it off.
