Electronics are most afraid of water. Compact phones are particularly prone to water damage. If you encounter this situation, quickly follow these steps to save your phone and prevent unnecessary expenses.

First and foremost, you need to quickly remove the phone from the water to prevent it from further damage. Then, follow these steps:

Tilt the ports downwards

After taking it out, tilt the phone with the ports facing downwards. Use a paper towel to quickly absorb the water around the ports. Avoid letting the headphone jack and charging port face upwards as it may lead to water entering the internal components, causing damage that cannot be repaired.

Turn off the phone immediately

Also, quickly turn off the phone. This is because turning it off immediately can prevent circuit shorts that may damage the phone.

Disassemble the phone

For phones that can be disassembled, the next step is to disassemble them to allow any water trapped inside to escape easily. Pay special attention to quickly remove the phone case and any other removable parts.

Dry the exterior of the device

After disassembling the parts, use a soft cloth and absorbent paper to dry the water on the phone’s surface. This step is easier and quicker with regular water compared to other liquids. Gently dry it, avoiding excessive rubbing to prevent damage to the components.

Dehumidify the interior of the device

Submerge the phone in uncooked rice or use a desiccant pack for several hours to a day to absorb the moisture inside and dry the phone quickly. You can also use a low-power vacuum cleaner to remove the trapped water. Keep the phone in a well-ventilated area to facilitate drying, but avoid direct exposure to sunlight, as it may heat up and cause damage.

Turn on the phone and test

After completing the above steps, turn on the phone and check if it works properly. Reassemble any parts that were removed, connect the charger, and power on to see if there are any issues.

If the phone was submerged for a short period of time, these steps are quite effective. However, if the phone was immersed in water for a long time, it is difficult to save it. It’s best to take it to a professional repair center as soon as possible instead of attempting to rescue it, as it may cause further damage.

To prevent your phone from falling into water, be cautious when using it, avoiding using it near water sources or while cooking. When in places with a lot of water, avoid putting the phone in shallow pockets as it may easily fall out. When traveling or spending time outdoors, use specialized waterproof protection for electronics such as waterproof bags or ziplock bags.
