Avoid Worshipping Three Generations of Ancestors on the Altar

According to Feng Shui principles, the household altar should be reserved for deities, the earth god, the kitchen god, and the worship of the immediate paternal and maternal families. Nothing else should be placed on the family altar. The paternal side is placed on the left side of the altar, and the maternal side is placed on the symmetrical right side.

If there is a young deceased family member (referred to as ‘Mrs. Co’ or ‘Mr. Manh’), a separate subsidiary altar should be set up for them.

Artificial Items

Artificial fruits, flowers, and fake money might look aesthetically pleasing and can be used repeatedly without replacement, but they are not suitable for the altar. Displaying such items demonstrates a casual and disrespectful attitude towards one’s ancestors. As a result, the family may not receive the blessings, protection, and prosperity that they seek from their ancestors.

Pay attention to the items placed on the altar.

Gold-plated Branches and Jade Leaves Offered at Pagodas

It is not advisable to bring gold-plated branches and jade leaves offered at pagodas and place them on the family altar, despite the intention of seeking blessings. These items may have been exposed to unwholesome environments, stored improperly, or come into contact with negative energies during their time at the pagoda.

Metal Stick for Circular Incense Burning

It is not recommended to use a metal stick to burn circular incense on the family altar. Only places of worship like temples, pagodas, and shrines traditionally use metal sticks inserted into the incense burner for this purpose. Doing so on a family altar is considered inappropriate and may negatively affect the health of the family members.

If one wishes to burn circular incense, it should be placed on a dish and burned outside the incense burner.

Sand in the Incense Burner

To stabilize the incense sticks in the burner, use clean ash made from burning straw, ensuring it is carefully sifted. Do not use sand in the incense burner, as it may contain impure and unclean substances, contradicting the purity of the worship space. Sand is believed to bring disharmony to the family, causing difficulties and health issues.
