The serene scenery of Dich Diep ancient village
According to local residents, Dich Diep village was formed around the beginning of the 11th century, originally called Dich Diep Trang.
The village still retains the ancient beauty of a traditional Vietnamese village with banyan trees, temples, pagodas, and wells, becoming a “healing” destination for travelers seeking peace.
Seen from above, Dich Diep village resembles a ship with its bow pointing towards the South Gate.
Photographer Nguyen Trong Cung from Thai Binh province was recently impressed by the peaceful and serene beauty of the village during his visit, capturing the familiar tranquil scenes of the Northern Vietnamese countryside.
The village still preserves 6 ancient house gates, 1 ancient village gate (South Gate), 2 wooden houses (one over 100 years old and another over 200 years old with southern-style roof tiles), 1 stone arch bridge over the river, and 3 wells at the end of the village.
The most noticeable feature of Dich Diep village, attracting visitors’ attention, is the South Gate, connected to the stone arch bridge built in 1864.

While strolling through the village, visitors will also come across ancient gates, mostly built in a parabolic vault style with curved and soft designs.
The gate roofs are tiled, and the vaults are connected to two vertical pillars, elaborately decorated. The gate faces are also intricately adorned with embossed Chinese characters, expressing the philosophy or character of the homeowner.
Depending on the location, terrain, and conditions of each house, the gate vaults vary in scale and grandeur.
Another interesting feature of Dich Diep village is a “green treasure” that is approximately 800 years old—a bodhi tree over 20 meters high with a massive trunk that takes about five adults to encircle.
The tree has massive roots, some about 40cm thick, growing long and firmly grasping the ground.
In recognition of its historical significance, in April 2021, the ancient bodhi tree in Dich Diep village was officially recognized as a Vietnamese Heritage Tree by the Vietnam Association for Nature and Environment Protection.
