What does “Don’t Indulge at the Third Watch” mean?
Taking the phrase literally, the third watch typically refers to the time between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. in ancient times. During this period, according to our regular body clock, the body starts releasing melatonin, and it’s usually bedtime. Hence, a man or woman should not indulge in excessive bedroom activities as it could impact their health.
The reason lies in the fact that during this time, the liver becomes active and starts detoxifying the body by eliminating toxins. If one does not rest properly during this period, it can affect the liver’s ability to cleanse the body. Additionally, the physical exertion involved in intimate activities for men, coupled with the possibility of cold drafts during the night in olden houses with large windows and doors, could lead to sudden illness or even a dangerous condition known as “upper wind.”
“Midnight snacking” – what’s the significance?
In ancient times, without clocks, people primarily worked and rested according to the sun’s rising and setting. Hence, midnight was a dark period, and eating late and heavily could impact one’s health. Scientifically, it’s known that eating a large dinner, especially late at night, can tire the stomach, leading to difficulty sleeping and potential health issues.
“Midnight snacking” is about reducing the burden on the stomach. In the olden days, people went to bed early, partly due to hard work and partly because there weren’t any entertaining activities.
Additionally, late-night eating can lead to obesity and weight gain, which are unhealthy. Obesity also brings along other chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular issues, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. So, it’s best to avoid overeating late at night or midnight to maintain your health!
