In this human life, we experience both blessings and calamities as a result of our actions in the past and present. The ancients used to say, “Heaven is compassionate and gives life.” They treated all living beings with kindness and compassion. Those who create blessings will be blessed with good fortune and prosperity. But if we do evil deeds, we will face calamities. However, due to the compassion of Heaven, those who commit wrongdoings and sincerely repent, correct their mistakes, and perform virtuous deeds will be able to resolve their misfortunes and transform negative circumstances.
Therefore, according to the teachings of the ancients, in this lifetime, whether we have done good or not, if we want to change our fortunes, we should focus on the two words: repentance and reform.
Genuine repentance leads to correction and transformation of misfortunes
The story of Yen Hue An, a native of Dan Duong district, Trang Giang province, illustrates the great value of repentance. Hue An’s parents were already in their middle age when they prayed to the deities and finally gave birth to him. As a result, Hue An was pampered from a young age. When he reached the school age, he showed ambition and hoped to achieve success and honor in the future.
However, Hue An often gathered with friends to engage in discussions about relationships between men and women, teasing and mocking each other. At that time, there was a young girl living in the neighborhood. Initially, Hue An would peep at her through a small hole in the wall, but later he would climb over the wall to play pranks on her. Hue An spent his days fantasizing about sexual matters, gradually neglecting his studies. He even engaged in prostitution in urban areas to satisfy his desires. He frequented tea houses, taverns, red-light districts, leaving traces of his presence everywhere. Every day, Hue An behaved promiscuously, spoke recklessly, spent money on brothels, and indulged in various vices. He also enjoyed reading obscene literature and supernatural novels, terrifying himself as if he had fallen into the realm of ghosts.
In the third year, while taking a stroll on the street, Hue An encountered a person distributing books on virtue. He reached out and took one, which had the words “Heavenly Influence” written on it. Curious, he started reading and was shocked and terrified. He reflected on his own actions and suddenly awakened from his delusions, thinking to himself:
“The things described in this book are exactly like me, as if it is talking about myself. It’s true that I have been foolish and committed numerous evil deeds! The ancient sages all advised people to abandon lustful desires, but I have been longing for them and have not been able to let go. I have been promiscuous without any restraint. It is indeed my own fault!”
That day, Hue An hurried home and lit incense, kneeling down to pray and vowing never to commit sexual misconduct. He also wanted to awaken others to abandon lustful desires and decided to print thousands of copies of this book on virtue, hoping to reduce their past karmic offenses.
Only two years later, after fulfilling all his promises, when the provincial exam came, Hue An came out on top. From that point on, he continued to make efforts and wholeheartedly advised and encouraged others. He distributed books, truly accumulating great merits and transforming countless people who had strayed from the right path.
Hue An also had a friend from school who stubbornly refused to change. This friend got caught in an extramarital affair and had to agree to compensate and write an IOU to be forgiven by the other party. Feeling embarrassed and afraid of being discovered and punished by his father, this friend committed suicide by jumping into a river. It’s a pity that he didn’t listen to Hue An’s advice earlier, to the point where his body sank three fathoms under the water, becoming prey for fish.
Hue An woke up in time, repented and corrected his mistakes, and diligently performed virtuous deeds to save others. As a result, he achieved success, longevity, and honor in his career. His children and grandchildren also achieved great success in life.
Repentance and correction lead to the restoration of fame and honor
The story of Ton Hong can serve as a lesson to many people. When Ton Hong was young, he made friends with a classmate at the Thai Academy. The two of them had a close relationship, like brothers. They shared joy and sorrow, read letters from home together without hiding anything. They even read each other’s love letters.
One day, the friend received a letter from home but refused to show it to Ton Hong. Perceiving the strange attitude of his friend, Ton Hong inquired. The friend replied, “There are a few words in the letter that, once you read them, will make you sad.” Finding the situation increasingly mysterious and difficult to understand, Ton Hong insisted on seeing it. Reluctantly, the friend handed over the letter written by his father.
In the letter, it said, “Yesterday, I had a strange dream. A deity showed me the list of candidates who passed the top-ranked examination. The deity led me to an examination hall and I saw your name and Ton Hong’s name on the gold-ranked list. But beneath Ton Hong’s name, there was a red line indicating that on that year and month, someone wrote a divorce paper. As a result, Heaven annulled Ton Hong’s name, and his fame also disappeared.”
Ton Hong was shocked and felt a cold sweat. The friend anxiously asked him what was wrong. Ton Hong honestly replied, “Yes, recently I encountered an old couple who had a serious argument and wanted to divorce. But they didn’t know how to write the divorce paper, so I helped them. At that time, I didn’t have any other intentions, but I just casually did it. I never expected to be reprimanded by the heavens for it.”
Seeing Ton Hong’s worries and fears, the friend tried to comfort him, saying, “Dreams are often unclear and hard to interpret. Don’t take it to heart. You are a talented person. Isn’t it possible for you to pass the gold-ranked examination?”
When the exam results were announced, it turned out that Ton Hong’s friend passed, but Ton Hong failed to make it to the gold-ranked list. This surprised both of them and made them believe that the dream was a warning, and not just a fantasy.
Ton Hong became sorrowful and overwhelmed with regret. The friend also felt guilty and regretful. He came up with a plan: “Brother, don’t be too sad. When I return, I will advise the old couple to remarry and make up for your mistake. What do you think?”
Ton Hong agreed and provided his friend with the identity and address of the elderly couple. Later, his friend visited them, found that both of them were still unmarried, and discussed the matter with them. They prepared a feast and used kind words to reconcile the couple, advising them to remarry.
After everything was settled, the friend wrote a letter to inform Ton Hong, and when Ton Hong read it, he was filled with joy and gratitude. From then on, Ton Hong’s career progressed like a soaring kite. He was exempted from taking the provincial examination and was promoted to an important position. While in office, whenever there was a couple quarreling and wanting to divorce, Ton Hong would try his best to reconcile them, striving to preserve family harmony for many people.
In the folk saying, it is warned that advising others to divorce is the most abhorrent thing in life. Therefore, the act of Ton Hong writing a divorce document for that couple was considered a great misfortune. Thus, after repenting and correcting his mistakes, he encountered favorable conditions in life.
