Mai Phương and Kha Ly, both born in 1985, starred together in the film “Cổng Mặt Trời” (Gate of the Sun).

Mai Phương – The Resilient Smile of a Talented Artist

Phan Thị Mai Phương, born on January 14, 1985, in Haiphong, began her artistic journey at a young age. She was a member of the Tuổi Ngọc drama team (at the District 1 Youth House in Ho Chi Minh City), where each of her performances left an impression with her quick wit and pure love for the stage.

Mai Phương graduated from the Faculty of Drama of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema (formerly known as the Ho Chi Minh City College of Theater and Cinema).

In 1997, her first role was a leading part in the children’s film Đôi Bạn (A Pair of Friends). Even as a first-year student at the Film School, she was invited to participate in several famous films such as Xóm Cào Cào and Mộng Phù Du.

Mai Phương left a beautiful mark on the screen with her gentle characters.

After graduating, Mai Phương made her mark with roles such as Đậu, the girl selling tea in Trai Nhảy (2007), Vân, who was deceived and abandoned by a director in Sóng Đời (2008), Sáu Nhú in Cuộc Phiêu Lưu Của Hai Lúa (2009), and Mai in Những Thiên Thần Áo Trắng (2010), alongside Miu Lê, Midu, Nam Cường, and Nhã Phương.

The most notable film in Mai Phương’s career was Cổng Mặt Trời in 2010. In the film, she portrayed a strong woman who deeply loved her childhood friend, despite knowing he was gay.

Mai Phương was often typecast in gentle and sincere roles, matching her gentle appearance and optimistic personality. Even when faced with a serious illness, the actress remained optimistic and dedicated herself to her art.

During the time she discovered her illness, the sitcom Những Bà Mẹ Bỉm Sữa (The Diaper Moms), in which she played a single mother always cheerful, was aired. This role reminded viewers of Mai Phương’s real-life image.

Mai Phương is remembered for her optimistic smile.

In 2013, Mai Phương gave birth to her daughter, Lavie, and became a single mother after her partner, Phùng Ngọc Huy, moved to the US. She bravely raised her child alone, working in various artistic fields, acting, hosting, and performing to provide for her daughter.

There were times when life was difficult and lacking due to reduced production of television films and decreased income, but she never gave up. Mai Phương kept her personal information private, focusing on her work as a way to protect her daughter and maintain her personal dignity.

In the program “Hát Câu Chuyện Tình” (Sing a Love Story), Mai Phương tearfully shared: “My nature is to live wholeheartedly and always strive in all matters, not just in love.

Facing difficulties in work and economic pressure, with only 2 million VND to spend in a month, I thought that I had to protect my child by all means. I paid the rent with my film fees, and other expenses were gradually calculated because I couldn’t figure them out.”

In October 2018, the actress was diagnosed with lung cancer and was discharged from the hospital in September 2019 after treatment. However, the disease progressed rapidly, and the cancer metastasized, causing her health to deteriorate significantly.

Despite the pain, Mai Phương remained optimistic. Her role in the web-drama Thần Chết Tập Sự (Apprentice of Death) in 2019 is a testament to her dedication to working until her last days.

On March 28, 2020, Mai Phương passed away at her home at the age of 35. Although her journey in this world was brief, she left behind memorable roles and the image of an independent, loving, and courageous woman. She faced her illness with a friendly smile and an unwavering spirit.
