Just over 25 miles from the center of Hanoi, Ham Lon Mountain (in Soc Son district, Hanoi) has become an ideal picnic spot for those looking to get away and immerse themselves in nature.
Standing at 1,516 feet above sea level, Ham Lon Mountain is likened to a miniature Dalat in Hanoi, attracting adventurous travelers with its beautiful scenery, cool climate, and pristine environment.
In December 2024, architect Nguyen Hong Nhat (34 years old) and his wife, Kieu Phuong, were still impressed by the breathtaking scenery of Ham Lon Mountain, just as they had been on their first visit.
“My first visit to Ham Lon Mountain was about 5-6 years ago. Back then, this place was still very pristine.
This is my third time here, and the scenery hasn’t changed much. It still exudes a romantic atmosphere with a cool and fresh climate, and there are now more convenient services available,” shared Nhat.
Ham Lon Mountain is an ideal picnic spot for families with young children or groups of young people looking for a quick getaway close to Hanoi.
The 34-year-old visitor revealed that he had been to Dalat and found Ham Lon Mountain to be a miniature version of the city of flowers.
“Both destinations offer fresh and pleasant weather and a cool climate. The scenery is also pristine and quiet. Ham Lon also has a pine forest that is no less beautiful than the famous pine hills of dreamy Dalat,” he expressed.
According to Nhat, visitors to Ham Lon Mountain can engage in outdoor activities such as camping, trekking, and more.
In addition to the pine forest, which rivals the beauty of Dalat, Ham Lon Lake is also an ideal check-in spot for visitors.
“To conquer Ham Lon Mountain, visitors can choose from two routes. One is a flat, less rugged trail, and the other involves following a stream through a dense forest, which takes about 3-4 hours.
If you don’t want to hike, you can have a barbecue by the lake, organize group games, or take advantage of the picturesque setting for photo ops,” suggested Nhat.
Ham Lon Mountain can be experienced in a day trip or an overnight stay.
There are a few local businesses offering dining and accommodation services. It is recommended to hire a local picnic service to ensure a fun and hassle-free trip.
“Before your trip, remember to check the weather forecast. It’s best to visit on sunny and dry days. Also, consider visiting during the colder months to avoid insects.
If you’re staying overnight, bring warm clothes and essential items like hats, umbrellas, and insect repellent. The temperature drops in the evening, and it can get quite chilly,” added Nhat.
In addition to Ham Lon Mountain, visitors can explore other refreshing destinations in the outskirts of Hanoi, such as Dong Do Lake, Quan Son Lake, Ba Vi, and more, all conveniently located within a short distance from the city.

Nestled amidst lush mountains and verdant forests, this idyllic destination boasts a temperate climate thanks to its elevation of over 800 meters above sea level. Aptly likened to Dalat of the South-Central region, this hidden gem offers a serene escape for travelers seeking spiritual enlightenment and immersion in pristine nature.
