Termites are destructive pests with a voracious appetite. They live in colonies and can cause extensive damage to homes, particularly wooden furniture and structures.
Termites can enter your home in a variety of ways. Even solidly built brick and concrete walls are susceptible to termite infestations.
Types of Termites
There are three common types of termites: subterranean, drywood, and dampwood termites.
Subterranean termites primarily live underground and are the most difficult to eradicate. You can only effectively target them by digging up the soil or taking advantage of damp conditions that cause cracks in the ground, exposing their nests.
Drywood termites, as their name suggests, thrive in dry wood. They feed on wood, gradually tunneling and damaging wooden items in your home. This type of termite can also affect walls.
Dampwood termites, on the other hand, are typically found in damp, decaying wood.
Tips for Termite Control
– Use Vinegar and Lemon
Mix the juice of two lemons with half a bowl of vinegar. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and spritz it around your home, especially in areas showing signs of termite infestation. This natural solution is safe for your family and the environment.

Natural ingredients like lemon and vinegar can be used to combat termites.
– Use Alcohol
Alcohol, particularly 90-degree alcohol, is effective against termites. Dig a small trench around the termite nest and pour the alcohol directly into it. As termites venture out to feed, they will come into contact with the alcohol and perish. Once you notice the effects, destroy the nest to prevent their return.
However, exercise caution when using alcohol as it is highly flammable.
– Use Salt
Salt is a safe and effective termite control method. Create a concentrated salt solution by mixing one part salt with one part water. Pour this solution into termite nests or areas where termites are present. You can also use a syringe to inject the solution directly into the nest.
Additionally, if you identify termite trails or frequent activity in certain areas, sprinkle some salt crystals there to deter their invasion.
– Use Light
At night, place a basin of water under a lamp. Termites are attracted to light and will swarm towards it. They will either cluster around the light source or venture towards lighted areas to mate. Typically, after mating, termites lose their wings and fall into the water.
Signs of a Termite Infestation in Your Home
If you notice that your wooden doors are difficult to open or become stuck, it could be due to termite droppings creating a humid environment that causes the wood to swell.
Tap on wooden surfaces and listen for a hollow sound, which may indicate that termites have tunneled inside.
Termites leave behind small, brown, granular droppings, indicating their presence and activity.
In severe cases, where termite colonies are large and damage to items is extensive, it is advisable to discard infested items and engage professional termite control services to effectively eradicate these pests from your home.
