Thanh Hóa is a top tourist destination in Vietnam, renowned for its stunning beaches and natural attractions. Every year, the province attracts a significant number of visitors and generates substantial revenue, especially during the summer months. Aside from the well-known and bustling beaches of Sầm Sơn and Hải Tiến, there’s a newly discovered gem: Bãi Đông beach, located on the Nghi Sơn peninsula in the province of Thanh Hóa.
Bãi Đông offers a serene and pristine beauty with its long coastline, surrounded by majestic mountains and rocky cliffs. It’s an ideal spot for camping, and witnessing both sunrise and sunset. Some have likened it to Lý Sơn or Phú Quốc, yet it’s much closer and more accessible. It’s a favorite among those seeking tranquility and a chance to explore nature in its purest form.
The renowned beauty queen, Đỗ Thị Hà, once visited Bãi Đông during winter and shared its captivating scenery with her fans. Bãi Đông remains largely untouched by commercialism and excessive entertainment options, making it a haven for those seeking peace and a connection with nature. It’s a popular choice for young travelers and families who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and find solace in the calm waters and serene atmosphere.
Conveniently located about 60 km from Thanh Hóa city and 150 km from Hanoi, Bãi Đông is easily accessible by car or limousine from the capital, taking around 3-4 hours. For those in Thanh Hóa, a motorcycle ride of just over an hour will lead you to this tranquil beach. The journey is smooth and pleasant, ensuring a comfortable trip.
While Bãi Đông is still in its infancy in terms of development, there are basic accommodations and dining options available for visitors. You can find a range of affordable to more comfortable stays, including charming homestays and hotels with sea views, such as Cam’s House, Đảo Ngọc, Motel Quý Trang, and Hương Biển, with prices ranging from one million VND per night.
Đỗ Thị Hà also visited Nghi Sơn Eco Island, the most luxurious resort in Bãi Đông, featuring around 18 rooms and bungalows that seamlessly blend with nature. The resort offers a rustic yet comfortable stay, with rooms built in the style of Maldives’ high-end beach huts, complete with thatched roofs and a natural setting.
Surrounded by lush nature, the resort provides a peaceful escape with its blue sea, white sand, and shady trees. Room rates range from 1.3 to 2.7 million VND per night and may vary depending on the season.
A notable addition to the resort in mid-May was the opening of Cầu Gỗ Eco, a 1-kilometer-long wooden bridge that has quickly become a popular check-in spot. Winding along the beach and through the rugged cliffs, it offers a breathtaking view of the sunrise and sunset.
The bridge features wooden tables and cushioned seats, creating a cozy atmosphere for guests to relax and enjoy a drink while taking in the stunning sunset. The entrance fee to the bridge is 100,000 VND, and guests staying at Nghi Sơn Eco Island receive one free ticket per day.
In addition to the bridge and the beach, visitors can explore the fishing village by motorbike and set up tents or chairs for camping on the grassy areas. There are plenty of Instagram-worthy spots, including a swing by the sea, the honeycomb-patterned rocks, and the vast stretch of white sand.
The best time to visit Bãi Đông is from April to August, when the weather is sunny and dry, and the sea is calm and inviting. It’s perfect for beach activities and outdoor fun. Avoid the rainy season from September to November to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Some recommended activities in Bãi Đông include a visit to Đảo Bung, SUP paddling, flycam photography, night squid fishing, camping on the grass, sunrise and sunset viewing, savoring fresh seafood, and snorkeling to admire the coral reefs.
