In order to obtain images for the comparison process, he hacked into the school’s network system to retrieve images of students. The result was beyond imagination as within just 4 hours of operation, Facemash attracted over 450 visits and 22,000 image views.

However, because this action was exposed, Harvard’s network administrators discovered it and accused him of violating security, copyright, and privacy rights. He faced expulsion from the school but eventually the penalties were dropped.

In the following semester, on February 4, 2004, Mark Zuckerberg decided to establish The Facebook, initially the website was called thefacebook.com. However, after only 6 days of operation, Zuckerberg was accused of intentionally tricking three Harvard classmates into believing that he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection.com. They sued him for using their ideas to build a competing product, and eventually everything was settled by compensating them with 1.2 million shares.

Facebook was officially launched in 2005, and the “The” in front of thefacebook.com was dropped, leaving only the name Facebook until today.
