Which king is famous for the legend of killing a wild tiger to protect the people?

His name is Cong Phan, known as Do Quan, who is the 7th generation grandson of Phung Toi Cai, who once entered the court of King Cao To (the Tang Dynasty), attended banquets and served as a courtier in Duong Lam Land.

His father is Phung Hap Khanh, a talented and virtuous person, who participated in the rebellion led by Mai Thuc Loan (722).

Phung Hap Khanh’s wife is from the Su family, and she gave birth to 3 children at once. The eldest son is Phung Hung, the second son is Phung Hai, and the youngest son is Phung Dinh.

Compared to his two brothers, Phung Hung is the one with special qualities. He has good health, charisma, and intelligence. With his outstanding talent, Phung Hung continued his father’s legacy and became the lord of Duong Lam Land.

Before raising the rebellion against the domination of the Tang Dynasty, Phung Hung became famous in the region for his achievements in eliminating the wild tigers, bringing peace to the village.

At that time, a ferocious tiger frequently appeared in Duong Lam Land, killing people and capturing livestock. Faced with the disaster of the villagers, Phung Hung and his two brothers tried day and night to find a way to kill the tiger and save the innocent people.

Initially, he made straw scarecrows, dressed them in clothes like real people, and placed them where the tiger often passed by. At the first few times, the tiger was fooled and pounced on, thinking it was a person, but there was only a straw-stuffed pole. After many times, the tiger no longer paid attention to the scarecrows.

One day, when it was getting dark, Phung Hung stripped off his clothes, covered himself with mud, and stood in place of the scarecrow made of straw. When the tiger appeared, the smell of mud overwhelmed the smell of a person, so it did not recognize Phung Hung and just passed by like usual.

At that moment, Phung Hung suddenly jumped on the tiger, grabbed it tightly. After a wrestling match, the tiger became exhausted. With the help of his two brothers, Phung Hung killed the ferocious tiger and eliminated a great threat to the village.

His fame spread far and wide, and that was one of the important factors for Phung Hung to rally the people to rise up and expel the invading army, to regain independence for Giao Chau.

Phung Hung led a rebellion against the ruling regime of which dynasty in the North, in order to establish autonomy for Giao Chau?

According to Vietnamese historical legends, at that time, the ruling regime of the Tang Dynasty in China was weakening. Taking advantage of that opportunity, the ruling class in An Nam constantly exploited, plundered, and oppressed the people, causing them to suffer.

Hating the oppressive policies of the Tang Dynasty officials, when the soldiers in Tong Binh rebelled, in 766, Phung Hung launched a major uprising to fight against the ruling government of the Tang Dynasty.

The uprising led by Phung Hung received widespread support from the people throughout Giao Chau. At first, the three Phung brothers controlled Duong Lam and then the volunteer army occupied a large area around the Phong Chau region, establishing a stronghold to fight against the invaders.

Phung Hung called himself Do Quan, Phung Hai called himself Do Bao, Phung Dinh called himself Do Tong, and they divided the army to defend the vulnerable areas. The Tang Dynasty general, Cao Chinh Binh, sent troops to suppress them but could not do anything. The situation continued like that for more than 20 years.

In April 791, Phung Hung and his generals besieged Tong Binh (Hanoi). Phung Hung’s army was divided into five routes led by Phung Hai, Phung Dinh, Do Anh Han, Bo Pha Can, and the commander Phung Hung, attacking and besieging the city.

The battle was fierce, and many enemy soldiers died. Cao Chinh Binh had to take refuge in the city and was so scared that he fell ill and died. Phung Hung took over the stronghold and entered the Do Ho residence, to control the situation of the country.

After Phung Hung’s death, he was honored as Bo Cai Dai Vuong. His son, Phung An, continued his father’s career, but he only maintained it for two years before failing and surrendering to the enemy. Our country fell into the domination of foreign invaders again.

According to the Vietnamese historical legends by Nguyen Khac Thuan, after his death, Bo Cai Dai Vuong was very divine.

In the book “Viet Dien U Linh” by Ly Te Xuyen, it is recorded that Phung Hung was the deity who appeared to help Ngo Quyen defeat the Southern Han army on the Bach Dang River in 938.

After the victory, King Ngo offered sacrifices and had the temple of Phung Hung rebuilt.

When he died, he was buried in Tong Binh village and later his remains were brought back to his hometown. To commemorate the national hero, our country has named a street after Phung Hung in the eastern gate of the capital Hanoi.

Which Tang Dynasty official was so afraid that he fell ill and died when he was attacked by the Phung Hung rebels?

Phung Hung’s army and the Tang Dynasty defenders fought for nearly 20 years, neither side gaining a decisive victory.

In 791, Phung Hung advanced to besiege Tong Binh city (at that time it was called La Thanh). Faced with the strength of the Phung Hung rebels, the Tang Dynasty official Cao Chinh Binh did not dare to come out and fight, instead he closed the city gates and defended. Subsequently, he was so frightened that he fell ill and died.
