Empress Fushan (Filial and Virtuous Empress)
Empress Fushan, also known as the Filial and Virtuous Empress, came from a noble family, belonging to the Phu Sat lineage in Sa Te, Manciuang Province. At the age of 16, she was chosen by Emperor Yongzheng to become the designated wife and consort of Prince Four Hoàng Lịch, later Emperor Qianlong of the Great Qing Dynasty.
Being a kind and virtuous person, she had a dignified and humble personality and fulfilled her responsibilities during her time as the queen. Not only was she talented in managing the imperial harem, but she was also a compassionate and kind-hearted woman towards the other concubines in the palace. Because of this, despite his well-known philandering, Emperor Qianlong always held a special love and respect for her in his heart.
Although she gave birth to two princes for Emperor Qianlong, both of them died at a young age. Fushan Empress’s health deteriorated and she passed away at the age of 37. In addition to giving her a posthumous title, the emperor also organized a grand funeral, turning her into a legend in the history of the Qing Dynasty.
Highly Honored Concubine (Exemplary Virtue Noble Concubine)
In the recorded history of the Qing Dynasty, Highly Honored Concubine is considered one of Emperor Qianlong’s most favored concubines. With her noble origin from the Manciuang Province, Bao Y class, she was designated as the principal consort of Prince Hoằng Lịch and after his accession, Emperor Qianlong bestowed upon her the title of Highly Honored Concubine.
In the tenth year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign (1745), during a serious illness, she was given the title of Noble Virtue Concubine. However, just two days after her title was changed, she passed away and was posthumously given the title of Exemplary Virtue Noble Concubine.
Leisure Concubine (Heir Empress)
Leisure Concubine’s real name is O Lat Na Lap Thi, the daughter of a nobleman from Gia Thị. Initially, she was designated as the principal consort of Prince Hoằng Lịch. When Emperor Qianlong ascended to the throne, he bestowed upon her the title of Leisure Concubine. Her life afterward was a gradual rise to the highest position in the imperial harem of the Qing Dynasty.
In recorded history, Leisure Concubine gradually became Noble Leisure Concubine after the death of Highly Honored Concubine and was ranked second only to Empress Fushan. When the first Empress of Emperor Qianlong passed away, with the Emperor’s love and favor, she officially became the Heir Empress.
However, later in her life, she fell out of favor with the Emperor. O Lat Na Lap Thi passed away in a lonely and desolate state at the age of 49. Most of the ceremonial proceedings were omitted from her funeral. There was no posthumous title, no offerings, and no epitaph on her tomb. She was buried like a secondary concubine next to the tomb of Exemplary Virtue Noble Empress. The entire funeral ceremony used only 207.24 grams of silver, which was less than the compensation given to a low-ranking official in the court.
Edict Empress (Edict Ideals Noble Empress)
Edict Empress’s real name is Nguy Giai Thi, originating from Nguy Thi. With the favor of Emperor Qianlong, this beauty also became a legend in the history of the imperial harem. From Quý Nhân to Tần, then to Phi, and finally became Quý Phi.
Although Emperor Qianlong had many beautiful concubines, they did not bear him many children. Edict Empress was the one who gave birth to four princes and two princesses. However, among them, not many lived long, and the only consolation was the Fifteenth Prince Vĩnh Diễm, who later became Emperor Gia Khánh.
Edict Empress passed away at the age of 49. In addition to receiving the posthumous title Edict Ideals, Emperor Qianlong also wrote a poem in remembrance of her – Edict Ideals Noble Empress’s lament. Moreover, she was the fifth person to be buried with the Emperor in the underground palace.
Pure Concubine (Pure Virtue Noble Empress)
In historical books, Pure Concubine’s name is Thô thị – the most favored beauty of Emperor Qianlong. Despite her Han ethnicity and humble origin, she became the favorite concubine of Prince Hoằng Lịch. Due to her common origin and non-official family background, even though she gave birth to a prince, she was not designated as a principal consort.
