Some people are careful and neat, as they often tidy up the bed very neatly before checking out of a hotel room. However, this action is not appreciated by housekeeping staff, so why is that?
When a previous guest checks out, hotel staff will have to replace the used sheets and pillows with a new set of clean ones for the next guest. Therefore, if you straighten the sheets, make the bed flat, and fold the pillows neatly, they will have to go through the trouble of unfolding and pulling them out to replace with new ones.
On the other hand, for rooms with more than one bed, if you make the bed too neatly and flat, it may make the staff think that the bed has not been used and does not need new sheets and pillows. In this case, your kindness inadvertently harms the next guest as they will have to use dirty sheets and pillows.
Some people who fold the bed neatly also make the housekeeping staff worried because they don’t know what’s inside the pillows. They still have to check it, which takes longer to finish the job.
If you want to show that you are a polite guest, strip the sheets and mattress cover and leave them together with the used towels in a separate corner.
Similarly, with bath towels, hotel staff will appreciate it if you leave the used towels in a corner of the bathroom or in the bathtub because it is easier for them to collect and clean. If you fold them neatly, they will have a hard time distinguishing between used and clean towels, resulting in unnecessary waste when they have to wash them all.
What should you do before checking out?
Room service staff will appreciate it if you do these things before leaving the hotel, as they will save a lot of time and effort in cleaning up.
Turn off the TV, air conditioning, and electronic devices
Leaving these devices on not only wastes electricity but also makes the housekeeping staff unsure if the room has been checked out. They will spend time calling the front desk to verify.
Put items back in their proper place
If you return the TV remote, air conditioning remote, kettle, cups, etc. to their original position, the housekeeping staff will save a few minutes in doing this.
Collect rubbish
You only need to put the items considered as rubbish in the bin, which also helps the housekeeping staff carry less. If there is too much rubbish, you can put it in a plastic bag or simply gather it in one corner.
A tidy room not only benefits the housekeeping staff but also helps you easily spot any forgotten items.
Keep unused items separate
Do not mix clean towels with used ones. If you haven’t used them all, don’t unwrap them. As for used towels, don’t fold them neatly as if they haven’t been touched.
If not necessary, don’t use all the beds
You only have 2 people while the villa has 3 beds. If not necessary, you can keep 1-2 beds intact. This is a way to reduce the workload for housekeeping staff, as well as reduce the environmental impact by saving water for washing, detergent, and energy for washing and drying.
