Properly storing ripe avocados can extend their freshness for up to a week without any damage. In this article, we will share a method for storing ripe avocados using just water.

1How to store avocado with water

To store avocados with water, you will need a container with a lid that can hold the whole avocado with its peel. Fill the container with cold water, leaving about 2/3 of space. Place the whole avocado with peel into the container, close the lid tightly, and store it in the refrigerator.

Note: If you have more avocados than your container can hold, you can use multiple containers. Make sure the avocados have intact peels and stems. Avocados stored this way can be kept fresh for about 2 weeks. Before using the avocado, make sure to dry the peel.

Preparation before storing avocado

Step 1: Clean the avocado peel

Before storing avocados, gently clean their peels under running water to remove bacteria and mold that can affect their storage. You can also use warm water to get rid of any dirt before storing.

Step 2: Remove the avocado seed

Cut the avocado in half lengthwise and separate the two parts by rotating them in the opposite direction. Once the seed is exposed, lightly chop it and lift it out.

Store ripe avocado in the refrigerator

When avocados are ripe, you can store them by placing the whole avocado with its peel in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. They can be kept fresh for 1-2 weeks. If you have already cut an avocado, it is best to use it immediately as the flesh turns black quickly when exposed to air. To preserve the cut part for a short period, brush a little lemon juice on the exposed flesh surface, tightly wrap the avocado, and store it in the refrigerator.

Store avocado in the freezer

If you have a large quantity of ripe avocados that cannot be consumed in time, you can store them in the freezer. The National Center for Home Food Preservation (NCHFP-US) recommends pureeing ripe avocados for effective freezer storage.

To do this, scoop out the avocado flesh, puree it, and add some lemon juice (about 1 tablespoon per 2 avocados). Mix the pureed avocado with lemon juice, vacuum seal it, and place it in the freezer.

When you want to use the frozen avocado, thaw it for about 1-2 hours and use it immediately. You can use the frozen avocado to make smoothies, ice cream, or cakes according to your preference.
