The story of single father, Bai Jian, from Northeast China, is an inspiring one. Over 25 years, the 47-year-old has adopted over 120 children, with many now grown up and starting families of their own. Currently, 32 children around the age of 10 live with Bai in their “dream home.”
Bai’s journey began with a modest salary of 200 yuan a month (approximately 700,000 VND), barely enough to cover the monthly food expenses for seven people.
“I only intended to adopt a few children in need, but I found myself unable to turn away any child in need of a home and a loving family,” Bai shared.
Over the years, Bai has successfully raised and educated over 60 children, with many graduating from prestigious universities. Some of his children even attended Tsinghua University and Peking University, the top two universities in China and among the best in the world.
The remaining children have excelled in sports, becoming young athletes and representing China in their respective fields. In the 2010 International Marathon, five out of the six medal winners were Bai’s children.
During his most challenging times, Bai took on multiple jobs, including cleaning, selling clothes and phones, and even working as a barber, to ensure his children had access to quality education.
“Why did you persist despite the difficulties?” Bai was asked in an interview.
He replied with a smile, “Every child deserves love and a chance at a bright future. I merely helped them erase some of the gray shades of life.”
Many are curious about his secret to raising such well-behaved and successful children. Bai revealed his simple yet powerful formula: “Teaching morality, strict discipline, and understanding love.”
1. Teaching Morality
For Bai, being a father meant more than just teaching his children how to read and write. It was about instilling values and helping them become good people. This included teaching them about ethics, courage, and gratitude, which formed the foundation for self-reliance and strength of character.
To achieve this, Bai created a set of over 20 rules that his children had to memorize and follow. These rules emphasized honesty, prohibited theft and deception, encouraged respect for the law, and promoted sincerity and honesty.
2. Strict Discipline
Bai understood the importance of discipline in shaping his children’s lives. Every day, he and his children would wake up at 4:40 am to go for a morning run, lasting about two hours. This routine helped improve their physical health and taught them the value of discipline.
Bai’s strict adherence to discipline taught his children the value of time management and responsibility. They followed a tight schedule, ensuring they were punctual and organized in their daily lives.
3. Understanding Love
Beyond providing love, Bai emphasized the importance of understanding each child’s needs. He took the time to build trust and connect with each child, offering the love and support they needed.
These children often lacked love and affection, but Bai’s genuine care and kindness healed their emotional wounds. He believed that a foundation of trust, love, and understanding was crucial for his children to develop a healthy mindset and the confidence to face challenges head-on.
Today, Bai’s “dream home” has expanded and improved thanks to donations from generous benefactors and support from his now-grown children.
Bai has also found love and married a woman who shares his passion for caring for these children, creating a happy and loving family.
The Grateful Child: Are You Raising One?
“In the spiritual realm, it is believed that the bond between parents and children transcends lifetimes. This karmic connection is often seen as a way for souls to repay debts from past lives or to express gratitude. It is a profound and intricate web of relationships that shapes our present and future.”
