A recent study from the University of Michigan reveals that dietary habits not only impact health but can also shorten lifespan. Experts warn that each hot dog consumed can take away as much as 36 minutes of your life. Other foods on the “enemy of longevity” list include cured meats, egg sandwiches, cheese burgers, bacon, and sugary drinks. Notably, starting to consume sugary drinks at a young age can reduce your lifespan by almost a year by the time you’re 55.

According to the Daily Mail, a report from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) shows that nearly half of Americans over the age of two consume at least two cups of sugary drinks daily. Researchers point out that added sugar is a culprit in causing various cancers, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular issues. Worryingly, even alternative sweeteners may negatively impact health.
The study finds that just two cups of sugary drinks per day can cost you 24 minutes of your life. Specifically, if you start drinking sugary drinks at age five, by the time you turn 55, you could lose up to 304 days, almost a year of your life.
In addition to sugary drinks, other foods contribute to a shorter lifespan: each hot dog takes away 36 minutes, cured meats reduce 26 minutes, egg sandwiches shave off 10 minutes, cheese burgers cost 9 minutes, and bacon can shorten your life by 6 minutes.

This means that if you consume two cups of sugary drinks, one hot dog, and one egg sandwich daily for a year, your lifespan could be reduced by approximately 18 days. Adding cured meats to your diet would further shorten your lifespan by 25 days each year.
Food safety expert Darin Detwiler comments that while this study is observational, small but consistent changes in dietary habits can lead to a longer lifespan and improved health. “If you start drinking two cups of sugary drinks daily, a 20-year-old adult could lose 3-4 years of their lifespan,” he emphasizes.
To maintain long-term health, it’s essential to ditch sugary drinks and adjust your diet. This not only reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses but also enhances your overall quality of life.
