Mr. H shared that ever since their son turned three, people around them started gossiping that he might not be Mr. H’s biological son as he bore no resemblance to his father. “I have an average appearance with tanned skin and narrow eyes. In contrast, my son has fair skin and has become increasingly handsome as he grows up, which has fueled speculation that he might not be my biological child,” Mr. H explained.

On several occasions, after drinking alcohol, Mr. H confronted his wife about these rumors, but she would only cry and feel wronged. Eventually, they decided to undergo DNA testing to clear the air.

Many families have faced disputes and even broken up due to doubts about a child’s paternity. Photo illustration.

At the Hanoi Center for DNA Analysis and Genetic Technology, the couple opted for the fastest testing procedure. When the results were ready, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga, the center’s director, personally handed them over to the couple, confirming that their son was indeed Mr. H’s biological child.

“Even with the results in hand, the husband seemed hesitant and deep in thought,” recalled Ms. Nga. Sensing her husband’s lingering doubts, Mr. H’s wife exclaimed, “Has anyone suffered like me? I gave birth to a handsome boy, thinking that he would love and cherish our son, but instead, he doubted our child’s paternity all these years.”

After much deliberation, the couple left with the test results. However, later that afternoon, Mr. H returned to the center alone to meet with Ms. Nga and question the accuracy of the DNA test results. “Is it possible that my wife’s tears and pleas for sympathy influenced the center to provide favorable results?” he asked.

“Manipulating DNA test results is illegal. I can assure you that the results are 100% accurate,” Ms. Nga replied. She further explained that it is not uncommon for children to bear little resemblance to their parents. In some cases, children may not look like their parents but strongly resemble their grandparents or other relatives.

Although Mr. H left, his expression still betrayed his skepticism. Over a month later, he called Ms. Nga, sounding exhilarated, and admitted, “The results are indeed accurate. I have wrongfully accused my wife,” Ms. Nga recounted.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga shared that DNA testing often unveils hidden secrets.

Mr. H confided to Ms. Nga that after witnessing the turmoil their family had endured due to his doubts, his mother revealed a secret she had kept for over 30 years. Before her arranged marriage to Mr. H’s father, a wealthy man, she had been in a relationship with a very handsome man from a poor background. Mr. H was, in fact, the son of her former lover.

Fortunately, as Mr. H grew up, he did not resemble his biological father, allowing his mother to keep the secret hidden. However, Mr. H’s son strongly resembled his biological grandfather, who was the true paternal ancestor.

“My mother told me that my father passed away without ever knowing the truth. She intended to take this secret to her grave, but because of my suspicions, which threatened our family’s happiness, she felt compelled to disclose it,” Mr. H added. After dispelling his doubts about his wife, he vowed to Ms. Nga that he would unconditionally care for and protect his family.

Why do some children not resemble their fathers?

Scientific research reveals that the human body comprises trillions of cells, and most of these cells share a common DNA structure. Additionally, each person’s DNA is unique, and the combination of 50% of the father’s DNA and 50% of the mother’s DNA forms the child’s DNA. Consequently, it is entirely possible for a child to exhibit traits similar to their father.

Several factors can contribute to a child bearing little resemblance to their father, including:

– Multigenic inheritance, where multiple genes influence a particular trait, resulting in a child not resembling their father;

– Heterozygous parents, carrying different forms of a gene, which can lead to varied physical characteristics in their offspring;

– Mutations or changes in the DNA sequence, which can affect physical traits and contribute to a child’s dissimilarity to their father;

– Environmental factors, which can influence gene expression and, consequently, physical appearance;

Additionally, recessive genes in the current parents may be dominant in previous generations or shared among relatives within the same family line. As a result, a child may not resemble their parents but may strongly resemble other family members, such as grandparents, uncles, or aunts.
