Woman Diagnosed with Bilateral Breast Cancer

Ms. P.T.Y from Long Bien, Hanoi, initially noticed a small pink stain on her bra but did not experience any pain or discomfort, so she ignored it. A month later, the sign reappeared, along with an abnormal discharge from her nipple. When she went to the hospital for a check-up, the diagnosis revealed that she had breast cancer in both breasts simultaneously – a very rare condition in clinical practice.

After consulting with her doctor, the patient decided to undergo a complete bilateral mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection to eliminate the risk of recurrence.

On February 6th, the Central Obstetrics Hospital successfully performed a rare and pivotal surgery in treating gynecological cancer.

As the patient had underlying health conditions, including old age, diabetes, and hypertension, the surgical process was challenging. The medical team had to carefully plan the anesthesia, tumor removal, and postoperative recovery.

During the surgery, the patient faced a high risk of blood loss. Fortunately, thanks to the seamless coordination of the medical team, the operation was successful.

Post-surgery, the patient will continue to be monitored and undergo hormonal therapy to reduce the risk of recurrence.

According to the doctors, if the biopsy results from both tumors indicate no metastasis, the patient may not require chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

As a long-time expert in cancer examination and treatment, Dr. Nguyen Van Thang, Head of the Gynecologic Cancer Department at the Central Obstetrics Hospital, emphasized that bilateral breast cancer is a rare condition but can be detected early through screening.

Dr. Thang advised that women over 40 years old should undergo regular check-ups every two years, while those with high-risk factors (family history of breast cancer or genetic mutations) should be screened annually. Screening is inexpensive and immensely valuable, helping detect the disease in its early stages, increasing the chances of successful treatment, and reducing treatment costs.

Thanks to the close collaboration between experienced doctors and the patient’s determination, this rare bilateral breast cancer surgery marks a significant milestone in treating breast cancer at the Central Obstetrics Hospital. It is not only a medical success but also a beacon of hope for other patients fighting this deadly disease.

Women at High Risk for Breast Cancer

Family History of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer has a genetic component. If there is a history of the disease in the family, it is advisable to undergo screening every six months to one year.

Women Over 40 Years Old

The risk of breast cancer increases with age, especially after 40. Therefore, women in this age group should undergo regular examinations and mammograms.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Those who smoke, drink alcohol excessively, or lead an unhealthy life are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer and other types of cancer.

Abnormal Hormone Levels

Prolonged use of hormone replacement therapy or early menstruation and late menopause can increase the risk of breast cancer.
