A 20-year-old Taiwanese girl suddenly fainted and became paralyzed on one side after getting intimate with her boyfriend. When rushed to the hospital, doctors diagnosed her with a stroke due to cerebral ischemia. The cause was determined to be a hickey given by her boyfriend, which was located directly on her carotid artery and inadvertently caused serious complications.
This information was shared by Dr. Chen Ying-jian, a surgeon and director of the surgical center at Min Sheng Hospital in Taiwan, on the television program “Doctors Tell the Truth.” He mentioned that upon admitting the patient, she presented with a head injury and symptoms of hemiplegia. Through neurological examinations, the doctors suspected she had suffered a stroke.
CT scan results revealed that the patient had experienced cerebral ischemia. Additionally, it was notable that she had a hickey on her neck, right on the spot of the carotid artery. A subsequent ultrasound also detected atherosclerotic plaques in this artery. The doctor concluded that during the intimate moment, her boyfriend’s strong suction might have dislodged the plaque, forming a small blood clot that led to cerebral infarction. Hence, experts warn about the dangers of such kisses, especially when they occur on sensitive areas like the neck.

Experts Warn of the Dangers of Inappropriate Kissing
Herpes Transmission
This virus-caused infection has a high contagion rate and can lead to itching, pain, and even blisters in the mouth and on the lips. Consequently, deep kissing or “love bites” from an infected partner put you at significant risk of contracting herpes.
Blood Clots and Stroke
Applying excessive force during intimate kisses or hickeys can severely damage endothelial cells, leading to platelet adhesion and aggregation, potentially causing arterial stenosis. Subsequently, the localized accumulation of thrombin converts fibrinogen to fibrin, forming blood clots that interfere with cerebral blood flow. In rare but dangerous cases, this can result in stroke and other life-threatening cerebrovascular issues.

Carotid Sinus Syndrome
Kissing or hickeys on the carotid sinus with intense pressure can induce carotid sinus syndrome (also known as “cervical syndrome”), leading to reduced heart rate and blood pressure, and in severe cases, syncope and cardiac arrest. While this syndrome resulting from kissing is rare in clinical settings, the aforementioned case illustrates its potential occurrence.
