My husband and I have two grandchildren, but our son passed away early, and our daughter now has her own family. My son-in-law is from another province and came to my hometown to pursue his career, where he met my daughter, and they eventually got married. Feeling sorry for my son-in-law being away from his family, I always treated him like my own son and was very good to him, mainly to ensure my daughter’s happiness.
The young couple lived with us for about three years, during which time we focused all our efforts on them since our daughter was our only child. We gave all our savings to our daughter and son-in-law for medical treatments and artificial insemination to have a baby.
Fortunately, they were finally blessed with a baby boy, which delighted my husband and me. As the paternal family lived far away, they only visited us for the second time when our grandchildren were born.
I don’t know if they had any concerns about our family background, but after they left, my son-in-law insisted that my wife and I sell a piece of land to give them money so that they could live independently. However, we disagreed.

My husband said:
– We only have one daughter, and now she’s happily married. This house and this land are eventually theirs anyway, so you two might as well live here with us. In a few years, this house will be yours.
However, my son-in-law was adamant about not wanting to be a freeloader, having a child, and still relying on his in-laws. He urged my daughter to ask us for money or sell the land to give them money to buy another house. When we refused, they decided to pack their bags and rent a place of their own.
At this point, I said sadly:
– It’s only right for you to live independently now that you’re grown up, but can you wait a while longer? Your mother has just given birth to a grandchild, and her health is still weak. I want her to stay here so I can take care of her and the baby. Son-in-law, you just focus on making money.
My son-in-law works in an industrial park and earns a salary of 7-8 million VND per month. He was about to be promoted to team leader, so he was determined not to agree:
– I’m about to become a team leader, and I can’t even provide a decent place to live for my wife and child. I’ll be ashamed in front of my colleagues.
So, the couple moved out when my granddaughter was only four months old. Perhaps because they were angry with us, they rented a place about 100 kilometers away from us. My husband was very angry and didn’t want to have anything to do with them, but I knew that deep down, he also cared about his child and grandchild.

He said:
– How can we live in this big house with all this land while our children have to rent a place? Outsiders will laugh at us.
I didn’t say anything more.
The other day, my husband and I had one of our pigs slaughtered. I asked the butcher to cut the best and cleanest piece of tenderloin to take to my granddaughter, who is at the weaning stage.
At 4 a.m., when the pig was slaughtered, I took the earliest bus at 5 a.m. to take the meat to my daughter to keep it fresh. But perhaps I went too early, and when I arrived, they were still asleep, but I didn’t want to call them. I waited outside for about 30 minutes until my daughter was surprised to see me so early.
– Mom, why didn’t you call me? Why are you sitting outside?
– Well, I didn’t want to disturb you, and I thought it would be fine to come in when you woke up.
My son-in-law was still angry with me, so when he saw me, he just greeted me briefly and went back inside.
I remained cheerful and said:
– Look what I have here! I had one of our pigs slaughtered and brought you the best piece of tenderloin. Our granddaughter is seven months old now, isn’t she? She’s at the weaning stage, and this meat will be great for her.
My daughter also exclaimed that I was so thoughtful to choose the best piece of meat for her child because where they live, it’s hard to find such good meat.

I gave the meat to my daughter, washed my hands, and immediately played with my grandchild. I was so engrossed in playing with the baby that I forgot it was already lunchtime.
My son-in-law cooked lunch and invited me to eat. Looking at the dishes, I was stunned because there were so many dishes, and they were all made from the piece of pork I had just brought. Before I could say anything, my daughter asked her husband:
– Wow, why did you cook so many dishes? Pork belly, spicy pork, minced pork, and boiled pork. Did you use all the pork Mom just brought?
– Yes, I used it all. We’ll eat it all today. If there are leftovers, we’ll throw them away.
My daughter was also angry and said:
– How could you do that? Mom brought that meat for our baby to eat. Why didn’t you save it for her and cook it all? It’s hard to find such good meat here.
My son-in-law shrugged and said:
– It’s just meat. How do you know the meat here is not better than the meat from the countryside? Stop making a fuss. The baby is still young. Eating that meat might even make her sick. I have plenty of money to buy better meat for her.
After saying this, my son-in-law started eating, even though my daughter and I hadn’t sat down at the table yet.

I was shocked and angry at my son-in-law’s attitude, but I held back my tears to maintain my daughter’s happiness.
I couldn’t eat anything at that lunch, so I fed my granddaughter, and after she finished eating, I picked up my bag and left without wanting my grandchildren to see my tears.
On the way back, I thought about selling the piece of land to give my son-in-law money to buy a house. After all, it’s to help my daughter and granddaughter have a better place to live, and their happiness is what matters most.
