“One Night of Recklessness with a Younger Colleague: Why I Chose to Call Off My Engagement Despite My Fiancé’s Forgiveness”

“One Night of Recklessness with a Younger Colleague: Why I Chose to Call Off My Engagement Despite My Fiancé’s Forgiveness”

After nearly 8 years together, our families had met and supported our plans to marry. We were set to tie the knot by year’s end. Everyone said I was lucky to have a kind, decent, and loyal man like Tuan. I, too, once believed I’d spend my life with him. But one company trip changed everything in ways I never anticipated.

That night was the gala dinner, filled with food, drinks, and laughter. Though I’m not much of a drinker, the festive atmosphere had me raising my glass repeatedly. By the end of the event, I was dizzy with intoxication.

As others headed to their rooms, I wandered to the resort’s pool area to sober up. My head spun as I craved the night air. A colleague, three years my junior, brought me a glass of water and sat beside me.

We started with small talk, which soon turned to love and marriage. Perhaps it was the alcohol, but I found myself sharing doubts about my relationship that I’d never voiced before.

He listened without judgment, then smiled and said:

“If tonight you just want to forget all your worries, I can be with you. Let’s keep it between us. Tomorrow, we’ll return to our lives. What do you think?”

I knew what he meant by “be with.” I hesitated, my mind urging me to refuse, to return to my room, to remember my fiancé. But in that moment, curiosity and long-repressed rebellion won out. I chose a one-night stand with my younger colleague.

The next morning, I sat on the edge of the bed for a long time. I knew I’d betrayed the man who’d been by my side for nearly a decade. I felt ashamed and guilty, but what terrified me most was… I didn’t feel the remorse I’d expected.

On the journey home, my mind raced. I couldn’t stop asking why one mistake had shifted my emotions so profoundly.

Truth is, it didn’t start with the trip.

Over the years, I’d known Tuan struggled with intimacy. He never spoke of it, and I never dared to, fearing I’d hurt him. Each time we were together, I feigned satisfaction to spare his feelings.

I’d convinced myself that love was enough. But over time, I realized I was only fooling myself.

After that night with my colleague, I understood I had basic needs and desires as a woman. It left me more confused than ever.

I didn’t know if I was being selfish. I didn’t know if marrying him with these doubts would bring true happiness. Finally, I decided to tell Tuan the truth.

That night, I stayed with my younger colleague. (Illustrative image)

That evening, I met him at our usual café. I’d never found it so hard to speak. I told him everything: the trip, the drinking, the mistake I’d made.

I expected anger, accusations, even violence. But he just sat silently. Then he looked at me and softly said:

“I forgive you.”

Those five words stunned me. He continued:

“I know you’re not like that. You must’ve lost control. If you want, let’s pretend it never happened. I’ll start over with you.”

I’d braced for blame, but received unimaginable forgiveness. In that moment, I could only bow my head and cry.

His kindness made me feel unworthy. I realized that marrying him out of gratitude or guilt would be crueler than anything else.

Love needs not just forgiveness but harmony. If doubts lingered, our marriage would eventually drift apart. So, I took his hand and said through tears:

“I’m sorry. I’m the one at fault. You’re a good man, but I can’t marry you when I’m unsure if we’re truly meant to spend our lives together.”

He didn’t stop me, just nodded silently. It was the last time we sat together as lovers.

To this day, many think I left because I’d fallen for someone else or followed fleeting emotions. They may be right, or not. I don’t excuse my betrayal—it will forever stain my conscience.

But I’ve learned this: before marrying, never ignore critical issues out of fear of hurting your partner. Prolonged silence can cost both of you dearly.

I don’t know who I’ll meet next, or if my decision was right. I only know I couldn’t walk down the aisle with a good man if I wasn’t certain we were truly meant to be together for the rest of our lives.

Intimacy challenges like dryness, discomfort during intercourse, diminished libido, performance anxiety, and difficulty reaching climax are all too real for many adults. Yet, in Vietnam, these topics often remain shrouded in silence, leaving individuals to suffer in solitude rather than seeking the support they deserve.
