Morning Showers: A Common Misconception?
According to Dr. Aragona Giuseppe, medical advisor at Prescription Doctor (UK), many people have a morning shower routine to “wake up their bodies.” However, this practice allows bacteria, dirt, and allergens accumulated during the day to cling to pillows and bedsheets at night.
“Throughout the day, our bodies and hair come into contact with various pollutants, sweat, pollen, and airborne chemicals. If you don’t shower before bed, these substances will follow you into your bed, soiling your bedding and potentially causing allergies, skin irritation, and acne due to prolonged contact with oil and dirt,” Dr. Giuseppe shared with Glamour UK.
Evening Showers for Better Sleep and Skin
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Jason Singh, a healthcare professional in Virginia, USA, shared on TikTok that a warm evening shower not only cleanses the body after a long day but also promotes deeper sleep and more effective skin hydration.

According to Dr. Singh, warm water stimulates the body’s production of melatonin, the sleep-regulating hormone. After showering, the body cools down naturally, mimicking the process of preparing for sleep.
“When you dry off after a shower, your body temperature drops, creating the ideal condition for falling asleep,” Dr. Singh explained.
A 2019 study compiling 17 scientific works also concluded that showering in the evening with warm water between 40°C and 42.5°C significantly improved sleep quality.
Tips for Dry, Sensitive, or Acne-Prone Skin
Evening showers are particularly beneficial for individuals with dry, sensitive skin or skin conditions such as acne and eczema, according to experts. “Showering at night provides better hydration and protection for your skin because nighttime is when skin cells regenerate most actively,” advised Dr. Singh.
Morning Showers Still Have Their Place
However, the experts also acknowledged that morning showers have their benefits, especially if you’ve just exercised, sweated profusely, or need a boost to start your day.
A 2019 YouGov survey in the UK revealed an even split between morning and evening shower preferences among respondents. Interestingly, only 50% of Britons shower daily, while 25% shower every other day, and nearly 5% shower just once a week. Remarkably, 1% reported showering only once a month.
While both shower times have their pros and cons, experts recommend prioritizing evening showers, not only for hygiene but also to enhance sleep quality, nurture the skin, and maintain bed linen freshness.
