For individuals with kidney stones, staying hydrated is crucial to facilitating the stone removal process. Apart from drinking plain water, patients can incorporate certain beverages to aid in this process.

Lemon Water

Lemon water is rich in vitamin C, which aids in dissolving calcium oxalate crystals, a type of calcium salt that can lead to kidney stone issues. Thus, lemon water can help prevent the growth of kidney stones. Drinking lemon water also contributes to overall hydration.

According to a 2007 study by Duke University in the United States, 32 kidney stone patients showed a reduction in stone formation from 1 to 0.13 in a year when they consumed 2 liters of water with 100ml of lemon juice daily.

However, it is important to note that lemon water may not be suitable for individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Excessive consumption of lemon water can exacerbate acid reflux symptoms.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The primary component of apple cider vinegar is acetic acid, which helps detoxify the kidneys, dissolve kidney stones, and alleviate pain associated with kidney stones.

A review based on previous studies suggests that the moderate use of vinegar may reduce kidney stone formation. A daily intake of approximately two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar diluted in 170-220ml of water is recommended. Alternatively, apple cider vinegar can be used as a salad dressing. However, excessive consumption may lead to throat irritation, tooth enamel erosion, and acid reflux.

Diabetes patients should consult their physicians before incorporating apple cider vinegar into their diets. Those taking medication for any condition should also seek medical advice.

Lemon water and diluted apple cider vinegar may aid in kidney stone dissolution.

Hibiscus Tea

Also known as roselle or red sorrel tea, hibiscus tea is rich in antioxidants and has diuretic properties. This helps eliminate excess water and salt through urine, reducing the risk of kidney stone formation.

A 2008 study by Khon Kaen University in Thailand monitored the health of 9 individuals who consumed 1.5 grams of hibiscus tea, twice daily, and a control group of 9 individuals who were given a placebo. After 15 days, the hibiscus tea group exhibited improved uric acid levels in the blood and urine, reducing the likelihood of kidney stone formation.

Celery Juice

While many people use celery juice for weight loss, it can also aid in kidney stone elimination. A study observed that female patients with kidney stones tended to consume less celery compared to those without stones. Another study in 2019 on mice showed that celery extract could break down kidney stones.

However, celery may interact with medications or medical conditions, so patients should consult their doctors before regularly including celery in their diets.

Basil Juice

Basil juice contains acetic acid, which helps erode kidney stones. Additionally, basil has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, basil juice can expedite the dissolution of kidney stones while preventing urinary tract inflammation caused by stones.

Fresh basil juice or tea made from dried basil leaves can be consumed. However, excessive intake of basil juice or prolonged use should be avoided as it may lead to low blood sugar and low blood pressure.

It is important to note that while these beverages support kidney stone dissolution, they cannot replace plain water. Adequate daily water intake is essential to prevent and treat kidney stones. Patients should also follow their doctor’s instructions regarding medication, diet, and lifestyle modifications for effective kidney stone management.
