The Hard Life of Zhang Fang

Zhang Fang was born in 1987 in a poor village in Hunan Province, China. As the fifth child in a large family, she did not receive the same love and care as her older siblings. From a young age, Zhang Fang endured emotional coldness and abuse from her own family. Lacking the means to attend school, she had to drop out early and take on the backbreaking work of farming.

At the age of 14, Zhang Fang’s life changed when her father suffered a stroke. During this difficult time, a village doctor named Wen Chang Lin stepped in and saved her father’s life. From then on, he frequently visited Zhang Fang’s home to check on her father’s health and assist the family in their times of need. It was his kindness and concern that planted the seeds of love in the young girl’s heart.

Zhang Fang was touched by Dr. Lin’s kindness.

Determined to Keep Her Baby Despite Her Husband’s Advanced Age

Despite their significant age difference, the relationship between Zhang Fang and Dr. Lin blossomed. On her 23rd birthday, Zhang Fang courageously confessed her love for him. Initially, Dr. Lin hesitated due to their age gap, but moved by Zhang Fang’s sincerity and determination, he agreed to begin a serious relationship.

In 2012, Zhang Fang discovered she was pregnant. This was an unexpected yet joyous event for the couple. Although Dr. Lin worried about his advanced age and frail health, Zhang Fang was determined to keep the baby. She referred to the child as the “crystallization of their love” and longed to raise the child in a happy family.

Dr. Lin was overjoyed to become a father at the age of 71.

During her pregnancy, Dr. Lin took meticulous care of his wife. Despite their simple life, it was filled with sweetness.

On August 14, 2013, Zhang Fang gave birth to a healthy baby boy at the Ningxiang County Maternal and Child Health Hospital, naming him Wen Jing Tian.

While his wife was in labor, Dr. Lin anxiously paced outside. When he heard his son’s cries, he couldn’t hold back his tears. He gently held his baby, promising to love and protect his family.

The arrival of Wen Jing Tian brought even more warmth to this special family. Dr. Lin would wake up early to prepare breakfast and take care of the baby, allowing Zhang Fang to rest during her postpartum recovery.

Zhang Fang’s happy life with her husband was fleeting, lasting only 10 years.

In 2022, at the age of 81, Dr. Wen Chang Lin’s health began to deteriorate. He passed away after a long battle with illness, leaving Zhang Fang and their young son behind. At 35 years old, Zhang Fang resolutely took on the responsibility of raising their child alone.

She started selling products online to make a living and shared her daily life on social media. When asked about the possibility of remarrying, she asserted, “I will not remarry. I want to raise my son to be a kind person and continue his father’s legacy.”

Regarding her decision to have a child with her older husband, Zhang Fang shared, “At that time, I only thought about love and didn’t worry too much about gains and losses. Fortunately, my baby was born healthy, but I don’t have the courage to take the risk of having a second child.”

What Risks Do Older Men Face When Deciding to Have a Child?

Older men who choose to have children may face various risks related to their own health, as well as the health and development of their children. Here are the main risks:

1. Decline in Sperm Quality

As men age, the quality of their sperm tends to decrease. The number of healthy sperm reduces, and they may suffer genetic damage. This can lead to reduced fertility, difficulty conceiving, or infertility issues.

2. Risk of Birth Defects

Numerous studies have indicated that when older men have children, there is an increased risk of birth defects in the offspring. Older men’s sperm is more prone to mutations, which can affect the development of the fetus and result in birth defects.

3. Risks Related to Genetic Disorders

Older men may pass on genetic disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or other neurological conditions to their children. Research shows that the risk of these disorders increases significantly when the father is older.

4. Increased Risk of Miscarriage

Declining sperm quality can lead to abnormal embryo development, increasing the risk of miscarriage or premature birth. Studies show that the wives of older men have a higher risk of miscarriage, even if the mother is young and healthy.

5. Impact on the Father’s Health

Older men having children may also face health challenges. They are more likely to experience age-related health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes, which can limit their ability to care for and nurture their children in the early years.

6. Increased Chance of Having a Child with Developmental Delays

Some studies have suggested that children with older fathers may face developmental challenges related to intelligence, learning abilities, and social skills. While this doesn’t always occur, the risk increases with the father’s age.

In conclusion, when older men consider having children, they must carefully weigh the risks to their health, the quality of life for their family, and the future of their children. Consulting with medical professionals before making a decision is crucial to ensure a safe and happy pregnancy and parenting journey.
