The legal battle for the inheritance of Meritorious Artist Vu Linh’s estate took an unexpected turn on January 7th, as artist Hong Nhung (Vu Linh’s sister) lost the lawsuit. However, the court decided to award her 15% of the estate’s value, recognizing her contributions to caring for the family during Vu Linh’s frequent absences due to work. The remaining 85% was granted to Hong Loan, Vu Linh’s daughter.
As per the court’s ruling, Hong Loan is obligated to reimburse Hong Nhung for 15% of the estate’s value. Subsequently, she can request that Hong Nhung and her daughter, artist Hong Phuong, vacate the late artist’s residence at No. 5 Doan Thi Diem Street.
Despite her victory, Hong Loan, the daughter of the “King of Vietnamese Opera,” has recently filed an appeal against the decision made by the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City. She disagrees with the court’s decision to allocate 15% of the inheritance to her aunt, Hong Nhung.
The court ruled that Hong Nhung is entitled to 15% of the late artist Vu Linh’s estate.
Hong Loan has filed an appeal.
In a recent interview with Ngoi Sao, Hong Phuong (Hong Nhung’s daughter and Vu Linh’s niece) stated that she and her mother were aware of Hong Loan’s appeal and respected her right to do so. Hong Phuong also expressed her desire to retain her uncle’s house as a memorial for the family.
“If Loan feels that the court’s decision is not satisfactory, she has the right to appeal,” Hong Phuong said. “My mother has already spoken the truth in court, and we are at peace with the outcome. Our family values the truth above all else. I only hope to fulfill my uncle’s wishes and keep the house at No. 5 Doan Thi Diem Street as a memorial, without selling it.”

Hong Phuong also mentioned that despite feeling content with the court’s decision to award her 15% of her uncle’s estate, she and her mother are considering filing an appeal.
Discussing the legal battle, Hong Phuong shared her understanding of her uncle’s wishes, emphasizing that he would never have wanted such a dispute within the family. She revealed that the late artist valued their family bond and had high hopes for her artistic pursuits. Hong Phuong also opened up about the challenges she faced during this period, including enduring false accusations and being unable to pursue her career.

The property in question, located at No. 5 Doan Thi Diem Street, along with 3,007 square meters of land in Linh Trung Ward, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, and a car, formed part of Meritorious Artist Vu Linh’s estate. In 2023, Hong Loan requested that Hong Nhung and Hong Phuong vacate the premises due to disagreements. She subsequently had the house transferred to her name and moved in.
Nearly two years after the “King of Vietnamese Opera’s” passing, his family continues to face disputes. In June 2023, Hong Nhung filed a lawsuit against her niece, demanding co-ownership of the house and requesting the court to annul Hong Loan’s birth certificate updates. Hong Nhung asserted that her brother did not initiate the birth certificate process and questioned Hong Loan’s paternity.

In June 2024, Hong Nhung filed a lawsuit against her niece, Hong Loan.
Following the court’s decision on January 7th, Hong Loan expressed her determination not to divide the inheritance with her aunt. In a livestream, she stated, “The person who sued and demanded a share is not me. The land and the car are still in my father’s name, and while the court granted them 15%, we do not agree, so we have to appeal. I would rather use that money for charity and accumulate merit for my father than give it to people without a conscience. I will not divide the inheritance.”
In preparation for the upcoming Lunar New Year, Hong Loan has been busy renovating and repairing her late father’s house. She intends to preserve the original structure to cherish the memories associated with the home.
