Aesthetically, while it may not be as vibrant as some of the trendy plants on social media, its beauty lies in its simplicity. It has a low-growing, compact habit, with dark green, glossy leaves that have a reddish-brown underside. This foliage remains consistent year-round, and even without flowers, the plant is attractive. The flowers resemble those of Angel Wing Begonias, growing in clusters and displaying bright red or orange hues. Thus, it offers the best of both worlds—beautiful leaves and stunning blooms.
When it comes to flowering, few plants are as prolific as Dragon Wing Begonias, even outdoing the well-known clock vine (Thunbergia). This plant seems to exist to bloom, as it flowers continuously throughout the year. Even in the depths of winter in the northern regions, if brought indoors with access to sunlight through a window, it will continue to bloom. In fact, you might find yourself wishing for a brief respite from its relentless flowering!
Due to its profuse blooming habit, Dragon Wing Begonia requires regular maintenance to remove spent flowers. Just as you finish tidying up, a new wave of blossoms will appear, and the cycle continues. It’s a labor of love, but one that many gardeners are happy to undertake.

How to Grow and Care for Dragon Wing Begonia
It’s no exaggeration to say that aside from its intolerance to cold, Dragon Wing Begonia has very few flaws.
This plant can be easily propagated by stem cuttings. Cut a semi-hardwood stem about 10 cm long, either root it in water and then plant it, or directly stick it into moist soil, and it will quickly develop roots.
Dragon Wing Begonia grows rapidly, blooms abundantly, and has an attractive appearance. Additionally, it tolerates heat, sun, poor soil, and drought, and it is rarely bothered by pests or diseases, making it extremely low-maintenance. However, to encourage continuous blooming, you should provide the following care:
– Soil: In southern regions, Dragon Wing Begonia can be grown outdoors year-round. If you’re growing it in a container, use a well-draining, airy potting mix rich in organic matter, with some added mineral stones for good measure. A standard nutrient-rich potting mix will suffice.
– Light: This plant thrives in warm, bright conditions, and its leaves will be lusher with adequate sunlight. However, it tolerates shade well and can grow and flower in partially shaded areas, such as north-facing balconies or enclosed balconies with diffused light.
– Watering: Simply water when the soil feels dry, saturating it until water drains from the bottom of the pot. During spring and autumn, add a little phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer to the water to encourage better flowering.
Dragon Wing Begonia is exceptionally heat-tolerant and can withstand scorching temperatures. Nevertheless, during the summer, it’s advisable to move it to a cool, bright spot, sheltered from direct sunlight. Early morning sun or diffused light is sufficient. It does not tolerate cold, and once temperatures drop below 10°C, it should be brought indoors. However, it copes well with dry conditions, so in northern regions, as long as there is indoor heating, it will be fine, as long as it’s kept away from direct heat sources.
