The peak of the heatwave in the North, particularly in Hanoi, is expected to be today, May 8th. From today until tomorrow, there will be periods when the sun is not scorching, but the perceived temperature during the noon and afternoon hours will be very high (possibly exceeding 45 degrees Celsius). The weather is extremely hot, sultry, and uncomfortable due to the upcoming change in weather conditions.

According to current forecasts, from tomorrow afternoon, the aforementioned northeasterly winds may affect Northern Vietnam, starting in Cao Bang and Lang Son. By late evening or night, the winds will reach the Northeast and Red River Delta regions, including Hanoi. This is slightly earlier than previous forecasts.

The arrival of northeasterly winds amid the hot weather in the North will bring widespread thunderstorms. Many areas in the North will experience rain from tomorrow afternoon, while Hanoi will see rain from tomorrow evening, May 9th. The rain will continue into May 10th, although it may be interrupted by dry spells.

Notably, the thunderstorms associated with the changing weather conditions may bring strong gusts, whirlwinds, hail, and lightning. Residents are advised to adjust their plans accordingly and seek immediate shelter if they are outdoors during a thunderstorm.

In terms of temperature, the northeasterly winds will cause a significant drop in temperatures across the region. In Hanoi, the highest perceived temperature during the day (around noon and early afternoon) could drop by nearly 10 degrees Celsius (from around 43 degrees Celsius on May 9th to approximately 33-34 degrees Celsius on May 10th).

In summary, from the evening of May 9th to the night of May 9th, widespread thunderstorms are expected in the North. Starting May 10th, the heatwave will subside, and the weather will become more pleasant and comfortable.

Video: Fish die en masse after heavy rain in Ho Chi Minh City

A large number of fish were found dead in the Nhieu Loc- Thi Nghe canal after heavy rain in Ho Chi Minh City.

On the morning of May 8th, a large number of dead fish were spotted floating on the Nhieu Loc- Thi Nghe canal, from Thi Nghe Bridge in District 1 to Cong Ly Bridge in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City.

Specifically, the area near Hoang Hoa Tham Bridge and Kieu Bridge (connecting District 1 and Phu Nhuan District) had the highest concentration of dead fish, mostly tilapia, carp, and red carp, mixed with garbage and water hyacinths. Some fish were even seen gasping for air at the water’s surface.

Moreover, passersby had to cover their noses due to the foul smell emanating from the canal.

Local residents shared that this phenomenon of mass fish death occurs every year at the beginning of the rainy season.

On the afternoon of May 7th, heavy rain fell in many areas of Ho Chi Minh City.

According to the Southern Region Hydro-Meteorological Center, Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern provinces have officially entered the seasonal transition period, with hot and sunny weather during the day and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. Extreme weather events such as whirlwinds, lightning, and strong gusts are likely to occur in some areas.

The Nhieu Loc- Thi Nghe canal is nearly 10 km long and flows through Districts 1, 3, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan, and Tan Binh before emptying into the Saigon River.

Mass fish death often occurs at the beginning of the rainy season. In 2016, environmental workers collected up to 70 tons of dead fish from the Nhieu Loc- Thi Nghe canal.

The dead fish included tilapia, carp, and red carp, among others.

Fuel prices continue to drop

The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Finance have decided to reduce the retail price of RON 95 gasoline by VND 407 per liter to VND 19,179 per liter. The retail price of E5 RON 92 gasoline decreased by VND 377 per liter to over VND 18,777 per liter.

Meanwhile, the price of diesel oil decreased by VND 550 per liter to VND 16,809 per liter. The price of kerosene decreased by VND 623 per liter to VND 16,941 per liter. Mazut oil decreased by VND 665 per kg to VND 15,533 per kg. This is the second consecutive reduction in fuel prices.

In this adjustment, the management agency continues not to collect and use the Price Stabilization Fund for all fuel products.

This is the second consecutive reduction in fuel prices. Three days ago, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Finance reduced the selling price of RON 95 gasoline by VND 52 per liter and that of E5 RON 92 gasoline by VND 84 per liter.

Currently, fuel prices are at their lowest level in four years, similar to the prices in May 2021. Since the beginning of the year, RON 95 gasoline has increased nine times, decreased ten times, and remained unchanged once. Diesel oil has increased eight times, decreased ten times, and remained unchanged once.

Fuel prices have decreased for the second consecutive time.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the world oil market during this price adjustment period was influenced by various factors, including heightened tensions in the Middle East, OPEC+’s decision to increase oil production, and the ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine. These factors caused fluctuations in global oil prices over the past few days.

The average price of finished gasoline products in the world market between the price adjustment period on May 5th and May 8th was $73.2 per barrel of RON92 gasoline (down $1.9 per barrel) and $74.8 per barrel of RON95 gasoline (down $1.9 per barrel).

Regarding fuel prices, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has recently published the sixth draft of the Decree on Business of Gasoline and Oil, which includes significant changes. Specifically, the principle of adjusting gasoline and oil prices has been adjusted to be entirely market-based, and the State will only intervene in accordance with the Law on Prices to stabilize the market when there is a declaration of emergency, accident, disaster, epidemic, or abnormal fluctuations in the market price of gasoline and oil products by a competent authority.

The selling price of gasoline and oil is calculated using the formula: sourcing cost + business cost + profit + value-added tax. The sourcing cost, including the cost of imported sources and domestic sources, will be self-determined by traders based on their actual business situation, instead of being set within a frame by the Ministry of Industry and Trade as in previous drafts.

Wholesale and retail gasoline and oil prices within and outside the system will be self-calculated and announced by traders, and then reported to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Provincial People’s Committees, the Department of Industry and Trade, and the Market Management Departments where the traders’ distribution system is located.
